it came within about 130 million miles (210 million kilometers) of our star. The new imagery may highlight increased cometary activity caused by this solar passage, though NASA&#8217;s brief release doesn&#8217;t tease that possibility.<\/p>\n<div id=\"slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-P7qKLrj4MyjPZiL6PcX9rY\" class=\"slice-container newsletter-inbodyContent-slice newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-P7qKLrj4MyjPZiL6PcX9rY slice-container-newsletterForm\">\n<div data-hydrate=\"true\" class=\"newsletter-form__wrapper newsletter-form__wrapper--inbodyContent\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form__container\">\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__top-bar\" \/>\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__main-section\">\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"d0a8e5f1-4d95-4892-b215-ef6b2fdb2404\">&#8220;Assets within NASA&#8217;s science missions give the United States the unique capability to observe 3I\/ATLAS almost the entire time it passes through our celestial neighborhood, and study \u2014 with complementary scientific instruments and from different directions \u2014 how the comet behaves,&#8221; NASA officials said in the statement. &#8220;These assets include both spacecraft across the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\"><u>solar system<\/u><\/a>, as well as ground-based observatories.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Comet 3I\/ATLAS made its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/european-mars-orbiter-spies-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-zooming-past-red-planet-photos\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/european-mars-orbiter-spies-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-zooming-past-red-planet-photos\"><u>closest approach to Mars<\/u><\/a> on Oct. 3, flying within a mere 19 million miles (30 million km) of the Red Planet.
