Or did she die in bed of a mysterious, unexplained medical event?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminshzp1001g3b6nen3mrv89@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Defense attorneys for her husband, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/us\/live-news\/brian-walshe-murder-trial-12-01-25?t=1764626251241\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Brian Walshe<\/a>, will try to convince jurors of the latter, one said in opening statements Monday as his murder trial began in earnest, almost three years after Ana vanished from a Boston suburb in the early hours of New Year\u2019s Day 2023.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminshzp1001h3b6n4ysydppt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It was the first time anyone has publicly offered a theory for the cause of Ana\u2019s death since Walshe was charged with her murder. Her body has never been found, and while Walshe two weeks ago <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/19\/us\/brian-walshe-guilty-plea-legal-defense\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">pleaded guilty<\/a> to illegally disposing of Ana\u2019s body and misleading police as they investigated her disappearance, he insists he did not kill her.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminojvgt00123b6nqky98b8d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Walshe faces life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted of first-degree murder for Ana\u2019s death.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminsj1ie001n3b6nkxhbm1xj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here\u2019s what happened Monday during opening statements and the first day of witness testimony:\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminic51t00003b6n5qqn5z4r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Prosecutors have told the jury they will prove Walshe planned to kill his wife. But in opening statements Monday, Assistant District Attorney Greg Connor instead walked the panel through the known events in the days around Ana Walshe\u2019s disappearance \u2013 without suggesting how Walshe allegedly killed her.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmint36gi001x3b6n8dx0cmbp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ana Walshe flew to Massachusetts on December 30, 2022, from Washington, DC, where she worked as a real estate manager for Tishman Speyer. The next day, the Walshe family hosted Ana\u2019s former boss, who joined them to celebrate New Year\u2019s Eve.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmint6b6u00213b6nygfgp3rn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That man is expected to testify at trial that he left the Walshe home after 1 a.m. on January 1, 2023, and that the couple seemed happy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmint8dnc00243b6n49yklorb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen he left, she was home, she was alive, she was with her husband. No one has seen her since her husband said she left on January 1,\u201d the prosecutor said. \u201cShe has not accessed her finances, her email, her phone has made no calls and no one has found her body.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmint8s4j00273b6nok2lle57@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Connor then told the jury Walshe waited until January 4, 2023, to call Ana\u2019s employer, who then reported her missing. When law enforcement went to the Walshe home that day, Walshe told them he hadn\u2019t seen or heard from his wife since the morning of January 1, when he said she left for DC to handle a work emergency.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminta6gg002c3b6nrlycrthg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Investigators later learned that Walshe searched the internet on January 1 for answers to questions like, \u201cbest way to dispose of a body,\u201d \u201cCan you throw away body parts\u201d and \u201cIs it possible to clean DNA off a knife,\u201d Connor said.\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/cminorjks00183b6nwi0km68j@published\" class=\"image_large-elevate image_large__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image_large\" data-name=\"AP25335590606038.jpg\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-re data-breakpoints=\"{\" data-original-ratio=\"0.6852\" data-original-height=\"1713\" data-original-width=\"2500\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/ap25335590606038.jpg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<div class=\"image_large__container \" data-image-variation=\"image_large\" data-breakpoints=\"{\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintg1qn002f3b6n917kl9lw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The prosecutor also said Walshe went to Lowe\u2019s and Home Depot, where he bought hundreds of dollars in equipment and cleaning supplies \u2013\u2013 including a Tyvek suit, a hacksaw, a hatchet and 20 pounds of baking soda.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintgn7u002i3b6ndbyhjx6o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Connor told the panel Walshe then threw black trash bags away in a dumpster near his mother\u2019s home. But Monday marks the first time anyone has publicly offered an explanation for her death.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintj1pc002n3b6naph7synm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After their guest left early on New Year\u2019s morning, Brian and Ana Walshe went up to their bedroom to continue celebrating, Tipton told the jury.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintj1pc002o3b6nsl164up6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He then went downstairs from their bedroom to clean the kitchen and checked his emails, Tipton said. When Walshe returned to the bedroom, \u201cintending nothing more than to crawl into bed with Ana Walshe, the woman he loved,\u201d she was unresponsive, Tipton said: She was unexplainably dead in their bed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cminthj09002l3b6nhpe29dgs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s unclear at this point if Walshe will testify in his own defense. But Tipton said the jury will hear evidence to support the defense claim of a sudden, unexplainable death.\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/cminoq0j200153b6nzkdnnb4r@published\" class=\"image_large-elevate image_large__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image_large\" data-name=\"AP25335590514214.jpg\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-re data-breakpoints=\"{\" data-original-ratio=\"0.7028\" data-original-height=\"1757\" data-original-width=\"2500\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/ap25335590514214.jpg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<div class=\"image_large__container \" data-image-variation=\"image_large\" data-breakpoints=\"{\">\n       <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ap25335590514214.jpg\" alt=\"Defense attorney Larry Tipton told jurors his client, Brian Walshe, found his wife dead in their bedroom during his opening statement.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" height=\"1757\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintjpcj002r3b6nyr7ptrqy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tipton referenced the \u201cfrantic and tragic\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/us\/live-news\/brian-walshe-murder-trial-12-01-25?post-id=cmin87i5o000d3b6nk0px9cq6\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Google searches<\/a> Walshe made beginning January 1, 2023, explaining his client made those searches as he came to terms with his wife\u2019s death.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintkbvm002u3b6nvos2co7o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou will hear evidence that those searches evolved from \u2018how best to dispose of a body\u2019 to even dark subject matter, as he wrestled with the fact that Ana Walshe was dead,\u201d Tipton said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintlbbu002x3b6nccsemy3o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What the jury won\u2019t hear, according to Tipton, is evidence that Walshe murdered his wife.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintphx800353b6ngwhedq8w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When Walshe found his wife dead, he thought no one would believe he had nothing to do with it, his attorney said, and he worried about what might happen to his sons if people thought he killed his wife.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintpprc00383b6nsofokmgh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAnd so he told the story,\u201d the attorney said. \u201cHe told lies. He tried to hide so he could hang on to those boys.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintq85z003b3b6nye6gmf17@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhat will happen if they think, \u2018He did something bad to Ana,\u2019\u201d Tipton said, channeling his client\u2019s purported thought process at the time. \u201cWhere will those three boys go?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintqioa003e3b6nxxrt5ljy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBrian Walshe never killed Ana. Brian Walshe never thought about killing Ana. He would never think about killing Ana. During opening statements, Walshe\u2019s attorney acknowledged he lied to the police in all three interviews. He did not, however, specify what information provided in the hours of questioning wasn\u2019t true.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintsqpn003s3b6nlbx49mcx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the recordings played in court, Walshe told investigators he last saw his wife before 7 a.m. on New Year\u2019s Day, when she left for the airport to return to Washington, DC, for work. Walshe said at the time he waited to report her disappearance because he upset his wife a week earlier, when he purportedly overreacted after failing to get in touch with her around Christmas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintugbm003v3b6nwo3mfgk0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Walshe told investigators that, after Ana left the house on January 1, he made breakfast for his kids and played with them before he went out to run some errands. He went to see his mother and went to the grocery store and pharmacy while a nanny watched his children, Walshe told them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintuwqw003y3b6npvlicqxx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Walshe was arrested on January 8, 2023, and charged with misleading police in connection to Ana\u2019s disappearance. He was charged with her murder later that month, and he has been in commonwealth custody since his arrest.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintvf1p00443b6nwvfrvsep@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Prosecutors have suggested Brian Walshe could have been motivated to kill his wife over an extramarital romantic relationship she had with a man in Washington, DC.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintw63g00483b6ngmqule3t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ana Walshe was romantically involved with the real estate agent who helped her buy a townhouse in DC when she moved there for work in 2022, prosecutor Connor said in his opening statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintwfjp004b3b6n0uc8cszs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Walshe\u2019s attorney said Monday his client didn\u2019t know about the affair, but said Ana had told her husband she had a crush on the man, William Fastow. Walshe wasn\u2019t jealous, Tipton said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmintyp7t004e3b6nstfyjlet@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An affair \u201cdoes not make someone a bad person, does not make someone a bad mother,\u201d Tipton said.
