Andy Serkis\u2019 long-in-the-works animated adaptation of George Orwell\u2019s \u201cAnimal Farm\u201d has been a passion project of his for nearly 15 years. With a screenplay by Nicholas Stoller (\u201cThe Muppets\u201d), the film is finally nearing release and has secured a studio.<\/p>\n
How problematic must the film be for Angel Studios to have acquired \u201cAnimal Farm\u201d? The studio is mostly known for producing and distributing faith-based movies. The company gained widespread recognition for its crowd-funded approach, turning \u201cSound of Freedom\u201d into the surprise blockbuster of 2023.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnimal Farm\u201d features a voice cast including Seth Rogen, Steve Buscemi, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Woody Harrelson, Kathleen Turner, and Serkis himself.<\/p>\n
Orwell\u2019s classic novella, first published in 1945, is a scathing political allegory in which farm animals overthrow their human owner in the name of equality\u2014only to watch their dreams decay as the pigs in charge become as tyrannical as the humans they replaced. The story is a sharp indictment of authoritarianism and a cautionary tale about the corrupting nature of power.<\/p>\n
Adapting \u201cAnimal Farm\u201d has always been a challenge; its subtlety, layered meaning, and dark tone make it difficult to translate to screen. But Serkis, known for pushing performance capture and digital storytelling forward, hopes he is the filmmaker who can finally crack the code and deliver a version that does Orwell\u2019s message justice.<\/p>\n
It should be mentioned that Serkis\u2019s \u201cAnimal Farm\u201d screened at the Annecy Film Festival in June. Critical reaction was muted\u2014neither glowing endorsements nor prominent acclaim emerged following the screening.<\/p>\n
Audiences were underwhelmed by its tonal shift from Orwell\u2019s bleak satire toward a more family-friendly narrative. Oh, and apparently Serkis inserted lots of flatulence? The film veers in an unexpectedly juvenile direction\u2014including, notably, fart jokes. The decision to inject lowbrow humor into such weighty source material is rather baffling.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnimal Farm\u201d is scheduled to open theatrically sometime in 2026.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
