{"id":13356,"date":"2025-12-15T02:44:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T02:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/?p=13356"},"modified":"2025-12-15T02:44:02","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T02:44:02","slug":"heated-rivalry-stars-on-shane-and-ilyas-relationship-tuna-melt-scene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/?p=13356","title":{"rendered":"Heated Rivalry Stars on Shane and Ilya\u2019s Relationship, Tuna Melt Scene"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>[This story contains major spoilers from episode four of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/heated-rivalry\/\" id=\"auto-tag_heated-rivalry_1\" data-tag=\"heated-rivalry\">Heated Rivalry<\/a><\/em>. ]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    As streams of t.A.T.u.\u2019s \u201cAll The Things She Said\u201d likely jump after <em>Heated Rivalry<\/em>\u2019s fourth episode, fans of the series are anxiously waiting to see just where the show\u2019s protagonists Shane (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/hudson-williams\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hudson-williams_1\" data-tag=\"hudson-williams\">Hudson Williams<\/a>) and Ilya (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/connor-storrie\/\" id=\"auto-tag_connor-storrie_1\" data-tag=\"connor-storrie\">Connor Storrie<\/a>) stand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    After years of casual hookups whenever the other hockey player is in town or the All Star weekend finds them together, Shane and Ilya are confronted with the reality that things just might be getting real. When the pair spend what feels more like a domesticated day at Ilya\u2019s house rather than the quick affairs they\u2019re used to, Shane bolts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The Canadian hockey player finds himself in a relationship with actress Rose Landry (Sophie N\u00e9lisse), and Shane and Ilya\u2019s not-quite-relationship becomes even more complicated. The show\u2019s big moment takes place at a Montreal night club, set to \u201cAll The Things She Said,\u201d where the pair leave without saying a word.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Below, Williams and Storrie speak with <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-reviews\/heated-rivalry-review-hbo-max-gay-hockey-drama-1236435495\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reaction<\/a> of the series, why their characters needed that devastating ending and what they hope viewers take away from the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>I\u2019m not sure if either of you saw the reaction to the show coming, but how are you setting boundaries for yourself in this new reality?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>STORRIE<\/strong> Personally, I just limit my amount of time online. Luckily, we\u2019ve been super busy with press and all sorts of meetings and talks and this and that, so I haven\u2019t had too much time to really delve into the online response. It\u2019s super enticing and super easy to fall into a trap of wanting to know what everyone\u2019s saying about you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>WILLIAMS<\/strong> I used to tell people when it was sort of addicting and I would want to kind of scroll, that it\u2019s like people are having a conversation about you in the living room. Someone tells you that, and you\u2019re in your bedroom. You can go listen, but you don\u2019t have to. Most people are going to be like, \u201cWhat the hell are they saying?\u201d And go around the corner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>STORRIE<\/strong> I want to know what situation this is where someone\u2019s, like, talking about you in the living room. (<em>Laughs<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>WILLIAMS<\/strong> (<em>Laughs<\/em>.) It\u2019s a very hypothetical situation, but then again [it\u2019s] that situation [but] they don\u2019t even know you. If you turn your phone off, it all disappears and then you\u2019re just home alone drinking a coffee, tired, bad hair, acne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>STORRIE<\/strong> Not in the living room where they are.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>WILLIAMS<\/strong> None of it really exists unless you\u2019re on it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>In terms of where the show is at in episode four, it\u2019s a big turning point in the story. One thing Jacob [Tierney, showrunner] has emphasized is that sex is how these two people communicate. But I think this is where they\u2019re starting to realize they have to learn how to communicate outside of that. Where do you see that shift in them, and how did you tackle that?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>STORRIE<\/strong> The shift I think happens between them and then we see the ricochet effect of how that fragments and affects them both differently. I don\u2019t know about you [Hudson], but I didn\u2019t pre-plan a lot of stuff. I just remember doing the tuna melt scene after that. All I have to do is look at him and feed into his reality and what happens after the tuna melt scene. Be present and affected by that and then it just kind of leads into everything else.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>WILLIAMS<\/strong> You can read an arc, but you can\u2019t really play one, so you can\u2019t really manipulate one too much. We read the script, I read the book, I reread the script multiple times. I just had to trust that sort of imbued in the performance. Being in that moment, I remember the tuna melt scene and where that goes. I do remember that it was a disgusting feeling every time I\u2019d leave, I just felt gross in my stomach. I just want to cry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>STORRIE<\/strong> You can\u2019t plan for it. You just have to be so prepped in your person and the story as a whole that when it\u2019s at go time for that, you\u2019re ready for it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>It seems you guys have gotten quite close with each other, how do you then shift out of that when you\u2019re leaving the day?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>STORRIE<\/strong> You don\u2019t. I feel heartbroken forever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>WILLIAMS<\/strong> Then we don\u2019t speak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>STORRIE<\/strong> We\u2019re always heartbroken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>WILLIAMS<\/strong> I think we had a bit of levity. [Connor] had the accent that [he] could kind of drop, and then I\u2019m like, oh, I\u2019m with Connor now. Shane feels like quite a departure even though it\u2019s not an accent. It feels like I can kind of leave that. But then when you revisit it, it feels like it\u2019s all there. It\u2019s almost like a children\u2019s game when you play dress up. It\u2019s like as soon as you come back to this imaginary world, it\u2019s just as alive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>It\u2019s a beat that every romance story has \u2014 things have to get bad a bit before they can get good. As the two people who are portraying these characters, why do you think that needs to happen?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>STORRIE<\/strong> Yearning. We love to yearn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>WILLIAMS<\/strong> There\u2019s this sellable aspect [where] you\u2019re more connected to it when there\u2019s the yearning. But also it feels real. I don\u2019t know too many stories where there\u2019s not a push and pull.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>STORRIE<\/strong> Totally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>WILLIAMS<\/strong> It feels reminiscent of my friends who have romances, stories I hear of parents who have fallen in love. It\u2019s a lot of bad happens. It\u2019s not just that we liked each other. We started having sex. Then we just boom, boom, boom, now we\u2019re happily married.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>STORRIE<\/strong> This story specifically, I think it just solidifies [Shane]. Being genuinely connected to one person like Rose, I think solidifies [Shane] contextually. Sometimes finding out what you do want is finding out what you don\u2019t want. Maybe that\u2019s why that\u2019s a plot point in a lot of these types of stories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>WILLIAMS<\/strong> Especially in a queer story where Rose sort of represents the image, the standards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>In the book, there was always this idea that Ilya was the one who fell first. I think from your portrayal of Shane, Hudson, that kind of shifted. There\u2019s been a very large debate on the internet.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>WILLIAMS<\/strong> Right, I\u2019ve seen this. I feel that if Ilya fell [because of] those freckles in the first meeting\u2026 It\u2019s the locker room, I think, when Shane falls. He\u2019s already falling before he says [his room number]. He\u2019s already kind of there. I think when he goes up to Ilya and walks \u2014 we cut it in the [show] \u2014 but he walks quite a ways just to go see Ilya, to go up to him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>STORRIE<\/strong> That first meeting you mean?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>WILLIAMS<\/strong> The first meeting. There\u2019s an attraction there, and shortly after it turns into more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>STORRIE<\/strong> The part that always stuck out to me [as when] Ilya really saw Shane for the first time and really liked him was actually \u2014 and the way that Jacob [Tierney] did it was so fricking good \u2014 when they\u2019re texting in the locker room. I think this is in episode one or two. [Ilya asks,] \u201cHow many times can you come in an hour?\u201d Then Shane earnestly responds, \u201cI don\u2019t know, twice maybe.\u201d I think that is just plain and simple the reason why Ilya likes Shane. [It\u2019s] because that\u2019s so the opposite of Ilya. He would never be straightforward and honest. He would never be vulnerable in that almost ignorant way. That\u2019s the moment for me. I think it also comes down to a cultural difference of Eastern Europeans or cultures outside of the West. They may not be as nice to you upfront, but when you\u2019re their friend, you\u2019re their family for life. They\u2019ll die for you. I think that\u2019s a difference of their love at the beginning. When I\u2019m in, I\u2019m in. Whereas Shane is in, kind of, sort of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>WILLIAMS<\/strong> Terrified by it. But I will say, whether it\u2019s a departure from the book or not, with all due respect to Rachel [Reid]\u2019s book as well, I think I play Shane [as] he\u2019s sort of in love right away and then never stops being in love. He makes other choices that might not look like that, but I think they\u2019re all kind of driven through how much intense love he feels for Ilya, and I stand by that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>What\u2019re you hoping people take away from the series?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>WILLIAMS<\/strong> Love.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>STORRIE<\/strong> I just hope that people \u2014 no matter what you think you need to be in life or what is expected of you\u00a0\u2014 just be yourself. Even if that breaks some sort of boundary, even if there\u2019s not a word for it, even if there\u2019s not space for that in whatever realm you live in.
