The first new temple announced during Dallin Oaks\u2019 presidency comes outside of General Conference \u2014 and not personally from him.<\/h2>\n

Perhaps the biggest surprise for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints watching the faith\u2019s October General Conference was that their new leader, Dallin H. Oaks, did not announce any new temples. <\/a><\/p>\n

It was a big change from the 93-year-old Oaks\u2019 immediate predecessor, Russell M. Nelson, who made it a hallmark of his presidency to reveal where in the global church these new sacred structures would be built, sometimes to cheers and squeals of delight from the faithful. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe loved to announce new temples at the conclusion of each General Conference,\u201d Oaks said in his address<\/a> at the fall gathering, \u201cand we all rejoiced with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, due to the \u201clarge number of temples now in the very earliest phases of planning and construction,\u201d said Oaks, who was named faith\u2019s 18th prophet-president on Oct. 14<\/a>, \u201cit is appropriate that we slow down the announcement of new temples.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also noted that church leaders will move forward with \u201cwhen and where to announce the construction of new temples.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Sunday, that \u201cwhen and where\u201d was realized for one temple. <\/p>\n

At an area Christmas devotional in Portland, Maine, general authority Seventy Allen D. Haynie, the church\u2019s Northeast Area president, announced the first new temple<\/a> of the Oaks presidency, would be built there. <\/p>\n

It will be Maine\u2019s first temple.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe specific location and timing of the construction will be announced later,\u201d according to a letter from the governing First Presidency that Haynie read. \u201cThis is a reason for all of us to rejoice and thank God for such a significant blessing \u2014 one that will allow more frequent access to the ordinances, covenants, and power that can only be found in the House of the Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n

Haynie explained that \u201cin a recent meeting of the First Presidency, a decision was made that… the announcement of the construction of a new temple should be made on location\u201d by an apostle or a member of an area presidency.\u201d <\/p>\n

He added that, \u201csuch an announcement by a member of an area presidency has never occurred before. Tonight, will be the first.\u201d<\/p>\n

It also marks the first temple to be announced outside of General Conference since central Utah\u2019s Ephraim Temple<\/a> was named in a special broadcast from Manti.<\/p>\n

During Nelson\u2019s nearly eight-year tenure, the 101-year-old leader (who died Sept. 27<\/a>) announced the construction of 200 temples (more than half of the faith\u2019s 383 existing or planned temples).<\/p>\n

With the planned Maine temple, six U.S. states (Delaware, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia) now lack either an existing Latter-day Saint temple or an announced one.<\/p>\n

And for Oaks to equal Nelson\u2019s record run of new temple announcements, it\u2019s one down, 199 to go.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
