To be somebody that puts on this jersey, and throws the football for this university, has been a huge honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">That jersey has a history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Like, a really good one, and Mateer has stepped into it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The Sooners produced or partly developed six quarterbacks \u2014 Philadelphia\u2019s Jalen Hurts, Arizona\u2019s Kyler Murray, Tampa Bay\u2019s Baker Mayfield, Chicago\u2019s Caleb Williams, New Orleans\u2019 Spencer Rattler and Cleveland\u2019s Dillon Gabriel \u2014 who have started an NFL game this season. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Murray and Mayfield both won the Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma. Williams did the same after he followed former Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley to USC. Hurts was a finalist in his lone season at Oklahoma and won the Super Bowl this year with the Eagles. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">None won a College Football Playoff game at Oklahoma. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The Sooners are 0-4 all time in playoff games and haven\u2019t played in one since they lost to eventual champion LSU in the Peach Bowl semifinal six years ago. Mateer, a Little Elm native, can do something his prestigious predecessors never did when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2025\/12\/15\/oklahoma-sooners-alabama-crimson-tide-college-football-playoff-first-round-storylines-kalen-deboer-brent-venables\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2025\/12\/15\/oklahoma-sooners-alabama-crimson-tide-college-football-playoff-first-round-storylines-kalen-deboer-brent-venables\/\">No. 8 Oklahoma (10-2) hosts No. 9 Alabama (10-3) in a first-round game at Norman\u2019s Memorial Stadium Friday night<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a dream come true,\u201d Mateer said. \u201cThis is everything I could\u2019ve asked for as a kid. I kind of told myself that, like, a year ago, I prayed for this opportunity. I\u2019ve hoped for it, I\u2019ve worked for it, I\u2019m glad it\u2019s here and I\u2019m not going to take it for granted.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body-text-header\">A different kind of Oklahoma quarterback<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Ten quarterbacks have been picked directly out of Oklahoma since Earl Crowder was the fifth signal caller <i>ever <\/i>selected in the second annual draft 86 years ago. That figure pales in comparison to USC (26), Notre Dame (25) or Stanford (23), but Oklahoma\u2019s three first-overall quarterbacks picks since 2010 lead the field and are the second-most all time. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Murray (2019), Mayfield (2018) and Sam Bradford (2010) were each selected first overall in their respective classes. Mayfield, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/texas-tech-red-raiders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/texas-tech-red-raiders\/\">Texas Tech<\/a> transfer, was the lowest-ranked high school recruit of the three as the No. 47 quarterback in his class according to 247Sports.com. The next nine quarterbacks who started a game for the Sooners were ranked No. 27 or higher in their class. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Mateer, the 10th to start a game since Mayfield, was ranked No. 119 in his. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2025\/08\/27\/who-is-john-mateer-five-things-to-know-about-oklahomas-starting-quarterback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2025\/08\/27\/who-is-john-mateer-five-things-to-know-about-oklahomas-starting-quarterback\/\">He was a four-year starter at Little Elm, passed for a school-record 6,868 yards and was the District 5-6A Offensive Player of the Year<\/a> in a league that included powerhouse Denton Guyer and Allen teams. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">He still didn\u2019t crack <i>The Dallas Morning News\u2019 <\/i>area top 100 recruits list in the 2022 class and remained lightly recruited through his senior season. Former Little Elm head coach Kendrick Brown said that Mateer\u2019s height (6-foot-1) might\u2019ve in part dulled the interest. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Mateer garnered six scholarship offers in high school. Five came from FCS programs. Renowned quarterback guru Eric Morris offered Mateer a scholarship at Incarnate Word and did so again after he was hired at Washington State.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cI actually offered him on the baseball field,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/unt-mean-green\/2025\/11\/25\/unt-head-coach-eric-morris-named-to-same-position-at-oklahoma-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/unt-mean-green\/2025\/11\/25\/unt-head-coach-eric-morris-named-to-same-position-at-oklahoma-state\/\">Morris, now Oklahoma State\u2019s head coach,<\/a> told <i>The Dallas Morning News <\/i>earlier this season. \u201cI think you really gain a different insight to these quarterbacks watching them play other sports. I offered Cam Ward watching him play basketball. It\u2019s hard to see someone really communicate and leadership qualities when they have a helmet on. I think it gives you a little bit more personal insight to the way they handle different situations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Mateer, then committed to Central Arkansas, flipped and signed with Washington State after another recruit decommitted and opened a spot behind Ward on the quarterback depth chart. He backed up Ward for two seasons, and after the eventual Heisman Trophy winner and first-overall draft choice transferred to Miami, started as a redshirt sophomore. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">He passed for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns at Washington State last year and entered the transfer portal afterwards. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2024\/12\/02\/oklahoma-expected-to-hire-washington-states-ben-arbuckle-as-new-oc-reports-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2024\/12\/02\/oklahoma-expected-to-hire-washington-states-ben-arbuckle-as-new-oc-reports-say\/\">He followed offensive coordinator\/quarterback coach Ben Arbuckle from Washington State to Oklahoma<\/a>, was named the starter this fall and was considered a Heisman Trophy dark horse candidate before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2025\/09\/23\/oklahoma-sooners-qb-john-mateer-brent-venables-michael-hawkins-longhorns-red-river\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2025\/09\/23\/oklahoma-sooners-qb-john-mateer-brent-venables-michael-hawkins-longhorns-red-river\/\">a broken bone in his right hand sidelined him for three weeks<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cHe had an opportunity to go to any university he wanted to,\u201d Brown said. \u201cJohn Mateer has always seen himself as a quarterback that would be at a place like Oklahoma. You\u2019re looking at a guy whose confidence level was through the roof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2025\/10\/11\/oklahoma-sooners-john-mateer-brent-venables-red-river-rivalry-texas-longhorns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2025\/10\/11\/oklahoma-sooners-john-mateer-brent-venables-red-river-rivalry-texas-longhorns\/\">Mateer returned on Oct. 11 vs. Texas in the Red River Rivalry game at the Cotton Bowl, and threw three interceptions in a 23-6 loss<\/a>. He\u2019d passed for 200 or more yards in each of his first five games but did so just twice \u2014 once in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2025\/10\/25\/oklahoma-sooners-ole-miss-rebels-score-lane-kiffin-john-mateer-trinidad-chambliss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2025\/10\/25\/oklahoma-sooners-ole-miss-rebels-score-lane-kiffin-john-mateer-trinidad-chambliss\/\">a loss to Ole Miss<\/a> and again in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2025\/11\/29\/oklahoma-sooners-lsu-score-results-playoff-standings-john-mateer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2025\/11\/29\/oklahoma-sooners-lsu-score-results-playoff-standings-john-mateer\/\">a win vs. LSU<\/a> \u2014 in his last seven. Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables acknowledged as recently as Wednesday that Mateer \u201cstill has some soreness\u201d in his surgically repaired hand. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cNot everything has gone perfect and it never does,\u201d Mateer said. \u201cBut I know I\u2019m in the right spot because I have the right people around me who still have my back and that\u2019s all that matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">His 2,578 yards passing and 12 touchdowns are both the fewest that any full-time Oklahoma quarterback has thrown in over a decade since the program became synonymous with high-level signal callers. The Sooners have compensated for the relative lack of offensive explosiveness with a Venables-led defense that ranks among the best in the country and helped anchor their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2025\/11\/15\/oklahoma-alabama-college-football-playoff-sec-kip-lewis-ty-simpson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2025\/11\/15\/oklahoma-alabama-college-football-playoff-sec-kip-lewis-ty-simpson\/\">Nov. 15 win over the Crimson Tide<\/a> that helped certify their playoff resume. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Mateer, who threw just six touchdowns in his last six regular-season games, passed for only 138 yards in a 23-21 win against Alabama when the two teams met for the first time. He acknowledged that there\u2019s been \u201ca lot of self scout\u201d in the two weeks since Oklahoma last played. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re always getting better,\u201d Mateer said. \u201cPeople can say, \u2018Oh, it hasn\u2019t clicked in 14 weeks, it\u2019s not going to.\u2019 Whatever. It\u2019s one day at a time, you get better, and you get better with the people around you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The people around him believe that Mateer, who grew up three hours south of campus and has watched Oklahoma\u2019s quarterback lineage blossom, can take a step closer toward those who came before him. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a reason John Mateer came to OU,\u201d Arbuckle said. \u201cHe wants to be the best, he wants to play at the best, he wants to compete against the best and he\u2019s never once lost sight of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body-text-header\">The D-FW pipeline<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Mateer joined an Oklahoma quarterback room well-visited by Dallas-Fort Worth products when he transferred from Washington State.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Denton Guyer alum Jackson Arnold, a five-star recruit and Gatorade National Player of the Year in high school, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2024\/12\/14\/denton-guyer-product-jackson-arnold-staying-in-sec-with-auburn-transfer-move\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2024\/12\/14\/denton-guyer-product-jackson-arnold-staying-in-sec-with-auburn-transfer-move\/\">started for the Sooners last season and transferred to Auburn prior to this one<\/a>. Frisco Emerson alum Michael Hawkins Jr., an Oklahoma legacy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2024\/10\/09\/how-michael-hawkins-hard-path-to-oklahoma-prepared-qb-for-historic-start-vs-no-1-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners\/2024\/10\/09\/how-michael-hawkins-hard-path-to-oklahoma-prepared-qb-for-historic-start-vs-no-1-texas\/\">started for the Sooners last season after Arnold was benched midyear<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cIt just shows how they produce their quarterbacks,\u201d Hawkins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/high-school-sports\/football\/2023\/04\/08\/frisco-emerson-four-star-quarterback-mike-hawkins-jr-commits-to-oklahoma\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/high-school-sports\/football\/2023\/04\/08\/frisco-emerson-four-star-quarterback-mike-hawkins-jr-commits-to-oklahoma\/\">told <i>The News <\/i>on the day that he signed with the Sooners<\/a>. \u201cIf it wasn\u2019t for that, it\u2019d probably be different for a lot of players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Three of the last four top-ranked quarterbacks on <i>The News\u2019 <\/i>top 100 recruits list signed with Oklahoma and six area signal callers overall in the last seven years have. Murray, a multi-time state champion who transferred to Oklahoma from Texas A&amp;M, remains the program\u2019s gold standard for Dallas-area grads after he totaled 5,362 yards of offense, 54 touchdowns and was selected first overall in the NFL draft after his lone season as Oklahoma\u2019s starter. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cYou look at all of these quarterbacks that have come through Oklahoma and had success in the NFL,\u201d Brown said. \u201cMan, if you\u2019re a quarterback, and you look at these Texas guys, if you go to Oklahoma and you can play and you can win, man, that resonates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Celina quarterback Bowe Bentley \u2014 a 4A Div.
