Some movies just don\u2019t go away, no matter how much time passes, and Michael Mann\u2019s<\/strong> Collateral<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is one of those movies that just keeps coming back around. Right now, it\u2019s doing it again, showing up on Netflix\u2019s global charts according to FlixPatrol, while also getting a ton of love on Paramount+ in the U.S. It\u2019s kind of wild to think that a 20-year-old thriller can still feel fresher and sharper than half the stuff that comes out today.<\/p>\n

Back in 2004, the movie turned heads because Tom Cruise<\/strong> went completely against type<\/a> \u2014 no heroic pilot, no charming spy, just Vincent, a cold-blooded hitman in a gray suit who forces a cab driver named Max (Jamie Foxx<\/strong>, who ended up getting an Oscar nomination) to drive him all night across Los Angeles while he carries out a string of hits. It\u2019s not exactly the kind of cab ride you\u2019d want to be stuck in, but the tension, the banter, and the way Mann shoots the city<\/a> at night makes it completely hypnotic.<\/p>\n

One of the biggest reasons the movie has aged so well is Mann\u2019s choice to shoot it digitally, which was still kind of a new thing at the time, and that gave the whole film this weirdly real, almost documentary-like feel that makes Los Angeles look neon and endless and dangerous all at once. The recent 20th anniversary 4K release<\/a> only made that more obvious, with all the deleted scenes, commentary, and extras showing just how much Mann sweated every single detail.<\/p>\n

And then there\u2019s the cast. Cruise and Foxx carry the whole thing, but the supporting roles from Jada Pinkett Smith, Mark Ruffalo<\/a>, Javier Bardem<\/a><\/strong>, and even Peter Berg<\/strong> (yes, the director of Lone Survivor<\/em><\/a>) add so much texture. Everyone feels like a real person who just happens to cross Vincent\u2019s path, and it makes the story feel bigger than just a night in a cab.<\/p>\n

\n So, What About Jason Statham?
\n <\/h2>\n

Here\u2019s where things get fun. Hardcore fans have always noticed that the guy who hands Vincent a briefcase at the airport in the very first scene sure looks a lot like Jason Statham<\/strong><\/a>, and they weren\u2019t wrong. He\u2019s officially in the movie as \u201cAirport Man,\u201d uncredited, but in 2022, screenwriter Stuart Beattie<\/strong> confirmed<\/a> the fan theory that it\u2019s supposed to actually be Frank Martin from The Transporter<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbsolutely Frank Martin of Transporter<\/em>. I asked Jason about that\u2026 Yeah, absolutely. Yes, it\u2019s canon. Same world\u2026 the studio will never admit to that, but in my head, absolutely it\u2019s him.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So, yeah, Collateral<\/em> is secretly a crossover movie and no one can tell you otherwise<\/strong>, which makes Cruise and Statham sharing the screen, even if it\u2019s for like 30 seconds, a little piece of movie nerd gold.<\/p>\n
