A new documentary reveals that Chevy Chase was put into a coma for around eight days after he experienced heart failure during the pandemic. It was reported in 2021<\/a> that the now-82-year-old comedian spent five weeks in the hospital due to undisclosed heart issues.<\/p>\n \u201c[He] has basically come back from the dead. He had heart failure,\u201d Chase\u2019s daughter, Caley Chase, said in the documentary, \u201cI\u2019m Chevy Chase and You\u2019re Not,\u201d premiering Jan. 1 on CNN.<\/p>\n More from Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cSomething was wrong, and he couldn\u2019t explain to me what was wrong. So, we go to the ER. His heart stops,\u201d Chase\u2019s wife, Jayni Chase, said. \u201cDuring those years he was drinking, he got cardiomyopathy; when the heart muscles get weaker, and they can\u2019t pump as much blood out with each beat.\u201d<\/p>\n Cardiomyopathy is a chronic disease that can lead to heart failure and other serious conditions.<\/p>\n \u201cThey decided to put him into a coma for maybe eight days,\u201d revealed Chase\u2019s longtime friend, Peter Aaron. \u201cThat\u2019s pretty rough on the body.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe doctor had warned us: \u2018We might not get him back. We don\u2019t know how present he\u2019ll be. Prepare yourselves for the worst.\u2019 He woke up, all he could do was use his voice,\u201d Caley continued, imitating disoriented noises.<\/p>\n She knew her dad was the same old Chevy Chase when a nurse came in to rearrange some medical equipment: \u201cShe said, \u2018I\u2019m going to have to put this in here.\u2019 And he said, \u2018That\u2019s what she said.’\u201d<\/p>\n Aaron said it took a while for Chevy to \u201creorient himself\u201d after the coma. He had some \u201ccognitive disability\u201d and played cards and chess to get his \u201chead back together.\u201d (\u201cI can only say how happy I am to now be back with my family,\u201d Chase said in a statement to the press<\/a> in 2021. \u201cI\u2019m feeling good. I was in the hospital five weeks. A heart issue. So, for now, I\u2019m around the house. Not going anywhere.\u201d)<\/p>\n In the documentary, Aaron said, \u201cI feel like his memory gaps come from that incident.\u201d<\/p>\n Chevy concurred, \u201cAccording to the doctors, my memory would be shot from it. That\u2019s what\u2019s happened here.\u201d<\/p>\n Throughout the doc, when confronted with uncomfortable moments from his past, including on-set disputes from \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d and \u201cCommunity,\u201d Chevy said he did not remember many of the incidents.<\/p>\n \u201cHeart failure is what it is. I\u2019m fine now,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s just that it affects your memory, the doctors have told me that. So, I have to be reminded of things.\u201d<\/p>\n
