But sometimes, artists defy those standards and end up having big hits anyway. We found three songs in country music that were surprisingly long and still became successful singles.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-welcome-to-the-future-by-brad-paisley\">\u201cWelcome To The Future\u201d by Brad Paisley<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio  is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\" \/>\n<p>Brad Paisley\u2019s \u201cWelcome To The Future\u201d is on his <em>American Saturday Night <\/em>album. Written by Paisley and Chris DubBois, the song came out in 2009. Coming in at just over six minutes, \u201cWelcome To The Future\u201d became a Top 5 hit for Paisley at country radio. <\/p>\n<p>The song was inspired by Barack Obama becoming the President of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got my kids\u2019 generation, where you can explain to them that the president is Black, and that\u2019s a remarkable thing,\u201d Paisley tells <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theboot.com\/brad-paisley-welcome-to-the-future-story-behind-the-song\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Boot<\/a><\/em>. \u201cThey\u2019re never going to understand. They\u2019re going to think, \u2018Why is that a big deal?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWelcome To The Future\u201d is about how life changes and evolves. It says, \u201c<em>My grandpa was in World War II \/ He fought against the Japanese \/ He wrote a hundred letters to my grandma \/ Mailed \u2019em from his base in the Philippines \/ I wish they could see this now \/ Where they say this change can go \/ Cause I was on a video chat this morning \/ With a company in Tokyo \/ Hey, everyday is a revolution \/ Welcome to the future<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-american-pie-by-don-mclean\">\u201cAmerican Pie\u201d by Don McLean<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio  is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\" \/>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/behind-the-song-american-pie-don-mclean\/\">American Pie<\/a>\u201d is Don McLean\u2019s second single, and without question the biggest song of his career. Out in 1971, \u201cAmerican Pie\u201d is more than eight and a half minutes long, an unheard of length in music of any genre.<\/p>\n<p>Written about the plane crash that claimed the lives of Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens, McLean never considered shortening the song.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerican Pie had to be over eight minutes long. I wasn\u2019t finished telling the story,\u201d he says (via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.15questions.net\/interview\/don-mclean-shares-his-creative-process\/page-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Fifteen Questions<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerican Pie\u201d begins with, \u201c<em>A long, long time ago \/ I can still remember how that music used to make me smile \/ And I knew if I had my chance\/ That I could make those people dance \/ And maybe they\u2019d be happy for a while \/ But February made me shiver \/ With every paper I\u2019d deliver \/ Bad news on the doorstep \/ I couldn\u2019t take one more step  I can\u2019t remember if I cried \/ When I read about his widowed bride \/ But something touched me deep inside \/ The day the music died<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fancy-by-reba-mcentire\">\u201cFancy\u201d by Reba McEntire<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio  is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\" \/>\n<p>Reba McEntire didn\u2019t have a No. 1 hit with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/the-story-behind-the-song-that-forever-changed-reba-mcentires-career\/\">Fancy<\/a>\u201d when she released it in 1991, on her <em>Rumor Has It <\/em>record. But almost 35 years later, the song remains her most memorable.<\/p>\n<p>Over six minutes in length, \u201cFancy\u201d is a true rags-to-riches story. It\u2019s about a girl who becomes a prostitute, later becoming a wealthy woman, one who lives without regrets.
