He\u2019d host Christmas breakfast and dinner.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiylwqr00023j6qpygun8q9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This year, holiday gatherings were scrapped, the single father\u2019s Christmas budget was slashed in half, and his credit cards were glutted from months of futile efforts to keep up with the rising cost of living.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiylwqr00033j6qj316to1g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In Surprise, Arizona, retiree Helen Nerviano has had a heck of a time getting her fixed income to stretch. She lives with her 80-year-old husband who has late-stage Parkinson\u2019s and requires full-time care.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj2okdl003c3j6qxhq05lj3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The cost of everyday goods and services is still higher than usual, and<em> <\/em>managing unexpected expenses \u2013 especially additional hospital visits and medical bills \u2013 has become all the more difficult.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiylwqr00043j6qhcxq8etl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A new year typically offers opportunities for fresh intentions and financial goal-setting.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiylwqr00053j6qcpuqjm5r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, for a growing swath of US households, economic pressures have hit like a punishingly stiff wind. Many Americans are heading into 2026 worse off, and their financial game plans have shifted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiylwqr00063j6qgmgeqjhu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI was thinking about driving for Uber on the side, just to be able to get the extra income and so I can buy more groceries,\u201d said Satterfield, 38, conceding that the trade-off would be sacrificing time with his 8-year-old daughter.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiylwqr00073j6qopmwlljl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nerviano, 76, said she will try to find employment in 2026 to help bring in some extra income. She also hopes to win the lottery. Otherwise, one path forward is a potential bankruptcy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiylwqr00083j6qm01yy0xc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI don\u2019t know of any other way out,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiylwqr00093j6q5nsenjjc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On paper, the US economy doesn\u2019t look too shabby.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiylwqr000a3j6qa3gwhdlp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/23\/economy\/us-gdp-q3\">grew at a robust 4.3% clip<\/a> during the third quarter, powered in part by strong consumer spending. Interest rates are edging down, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/18\/economy\/us-cpi-consumer-price-index-november\">inflation hasn\u2019t breached 3%<\/a> this year, the jobless rate is hovering within those \u201cfull employment\u201d bounds of 4% to 5%, wages are still outpacing inflation, households are keeping up with their debt payments on aggregate and stocks keep hitting record highs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiylwqr000b3j6qs68146ci@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For many Americans, however, it sure doesn\u2019t seem like boom times.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjizs0v800283j6quzteceh2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The economic gains have been uneven. The Federal Reserve\u2019s interest rate cuts haven\u2019t completely lowered borrowing costs. Inflation is still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/24\/economy\/us-tariffs-passthrough-consumers\">rising faster than usual<\/a>. The vast majority of industries are in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/19\/economy\/us-labor-market-outcomes\">\u201chiring recession,\u201d<\/a> and it\u2019s taking months to find a job. Wage growth is slipping. Consumer loan delinquencies<strong> <\/strong>are on the rise. And the bulk of the stock market gains are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/28\/business\/us-stocks-record-highs-american-households\">further enriching the wealthiest<\/a> of US households.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjizvibp002c3j6qa93vvpib@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Call it what you will \u2013 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/18\/business\/us-k-shaped-economy-spending\">K-shaped<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/31\/business\/k-shaped-economy\">two-lane<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/27\/business\/video\/windchill-economy-united-states-rising-prices-vrtc\">windchill<\/a> economy \u2013 but Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/24\/economy\/us-economy-affordability-gdp\">haven\u2019t felt this poorly<\/a> about present economic conditions since early 2021, when the country was still in the shadow of a worldwide<strong> <\/strong>pandemic.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiyhhl100003j6q5lm0hx1i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe more well-to-do households are powering spending; they\u2019ve been able to deal with the higher inflation over the last couple of years,\u201d said Justin Begley, an economist at Moody\u2019s Analytics. \u201cWhereas, the lower end of the income spectrum and middle-income households are still spending, but they\u2019re finding it harder to do so \u2013 given the fact that only just now are their wages starting to catch up with inflation.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/cmjs134rv00023b6p5wbn1heg@published\" class=\"image_large-elevate image_large__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image_large\" data-name=\"GettyImages-1619311795-1.jpg\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-re data-breakpoints=\"{\" data-original-ratio=\"0.75\" data-original-height=\"1500\" data-original-width=\"2000\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-1619311795-1.jpg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<div class=\"image_large__container \" data-image-variation=\"image_large\" data-breakpoints=\"{\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjreehx700003j6q6ew0miuj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And household debt is mounting: It hit a fresh record high of $18.59 trillion earlier this year, data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York shows.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjrlkmdv002t3j6q5p09qot2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, the eye-popping figure tells only part of the story. The levels of credit balances can be influenced by a variety of factors (including population growth and increased digital commerce), and they don\u2019t show how people are managing that debt.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiyot7y000s3j6q2y0kfn1p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On the aggregate, US households are keeping up with their bills. The closely watched debt service ratio, which is debt payments as a percentage of disposable income, has climbed from historic lows in 2020 but still sits just below pre-pandemic rates, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/releases\/dsr\/\" target=\"_blank\">Federal Reserve data shows.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj1mwt2002z3j6q5s4ti9iq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, the latest debt and credit data also shows there are plenty of pockets of financial pain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj1np8a00323j6qnuj5k6le@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During the third quarter, the share of credit card balances that became seriously delinquent rose to 12.41%, the highest rate in more than 14 years, according to the latest available data from the New York Fed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj1lmt2002n3j6qslm335z3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That report also showed that consumer bankruptcies rose to the highest level in five years, that the share of new delinquencies across all loan products inched up to an 11-year high and that student loan delinquencies continue to hit record highs (with borrowers 50 and older accounting for the largest share).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjrhq2er000g3j6qwpsvx2kh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The student loan delinquencies \u2013 a nasty side effect of pandemic relief programs expiring and loan forgiveness efforts falling short \u2013 have started to level off in recent months.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjrhwxpj000l3j6qjxlxkhup@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBut they\u2019re leveling off near an all-time high,\u201d Begley said. \u201cSo, it\u2019s not particularly encouraging. We could see as many as 4 million defaults in the next 12 months.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj4s2ja003p3j6qzui9urwg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Past-due loans can trigger a Rube Goldberg-like cascade of consequences: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/26\/economy\/student-loan-debt-ny-fed\">Tumbling credit scores, diminished opportunities to buy a home or get a loan<\/a>, garnished wages or reduced federal benefits and a further pullback in spending or increased reliance on credit cards.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjri4ra400103j6qcjcwchul@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The crippling debt isn\u2019t happening in a vacuum. The cost of living continues to grow \u2013 utility bills, insurance, housing, groceries \u2026 you name it \u2013 while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/19\/economy\/winter-heating-bills-price-increase\">safety nets have been cut back<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjri96kj00133j6qh4vet06u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Prices aren\u2019t rising as quickly as they did in the aftermath of the pandemic, but they\u2019re rising faster than normal \u2014 and the costs of some goods are higher because of President Donald Trump\u2019s wide-scale tariffs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjrjeyy6001j3j6qabb3ahjw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Satterfield sees it in the toys he bought his daughter for Christmas, the rent that\u2019s due every month, the trips to the grocery store, and the sharply higher electric bill.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjrjl0vu001m3j6qk29ppc8t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019m used to my electricity bill being $130 to $150, and I just got one this month that was $252,\u201d he said. \u201cEssentially, $100 more than previous years. And that extra $100 could have gone to providing more groceries or household items for me and my daughter, or just a nest egg to save for emergencies and things like that.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/cmjrm6iq900013b6pue2exe5g@published\" class=\"image_large-elevate portrait image_large__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image_large\" data-name=\"image0-1.jpg\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-re data-breakpoints=\"{\" data-original-ratio=\"1.3333333333333333\" data-original-height=\"2000\" data-original-width=\"1500\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/image0-1-20251229200254430.jpg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<div class=\"image_large__container \" data-image-variation=\"image_large\" data-breakpoints=\"{\">\n       <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image0-1-20251229200254430.jpg\" alt=\"Marcus Satterfield and his daughter on April 14.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" height=\"2000\" width=\"1500\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjrjnznh001r3j6qjg1f3yly@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When Helen Nerviano retired at the age of 62, her monthly health insurance costs were $170.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjrig2rf00163j6q8tadtvbx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI thought, \u2018Well, that\u2019s doable,\u2019 and I did all my math and made sure I could afford where I moved,\u201d said Nerviano. \u201cHad no clue what was on the horizon \u2013 the prices of food, insurance, clothing, and I adopted my granddaughter. It was just like a storm of events that I wasn\u2019t planning on when I retired.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiyot7y000x3j6qpyviv3hi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And in recent years, it\u2019s only intensified.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiyot7y00103j6qvxb1qvpj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s just a constant, never-ending struggle,\u201d she said. \u201cI go to the grocery store, I put things in my cart; by the time I get to the checkout, I turn back around and start taking things out, because I tell myself, \u2018You can\u2019t afford this.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiyot7y00173j6qhl27kjdl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s perpetual. There\u2019s no end in sight,\u201d she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjiyot7y001a3j6qltx1c85m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Satterfield, Nerviano and a host of other Americans still consider themselves optimists, and there are some glints of hope for the glass-half-full camp in 2026.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjrjrces001u3j6qfnptw7f8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If the recent slate of consumer-focused companies\u2019 earnings calls is any indication, prices could start moving lower for certain products, said Adam Josephson, a longtime paper and packaging sell-side analyst who now authors an economics newsletter.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjrm3v2400003b6pcyaszn2b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAn increasing number of consumer related companies are cutting prices to try to stimulate demand: You\u2019re seeing it with the homebuilders. You\u2019re seeing it with the [consumer packaged goods] companies,\u201d Josephson said. \u201cThe reasons why they\u2019re cutting is because people cannot afford their products.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjrkiriw00213j6q1fp3g9e3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many of those companies \u201craised prices on the order of 20% to 40% during the pandemic, depending on the company,\u201d Josephson said.
