\n<\/p>\n
Hugh Grant<\/a> and Emma Thompson<\/a> have made a lot of movies together, but there\u2019s one that Grant thought might be their \u201cmost psychotic.\u201d\n<\/p>\n Thompson, 66, opened up about her career in a video for GQ<\/a><\/em>, published Dec. 9. In it, she looked back at Love Actually<\/em><\/a>, the 2003 holiday ensemble film directed by Richard Curtis. Thompson played Karen, who\u2019s married to Alan Rickman<\/a>\u2019s Harry. She\u2019s also the sister of Grant\u2019s David, the new British Prime Minister<\/a>.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n \u201cIt’s the ultimate ensemble, isn’t it?\u201d the Oscar winner said of the movie. \u201cWe did sort of get flung into our pieces, one by one.\u201d\n<\/p>\n Then she remembered the conversation she had with Grant, 65, about it. \u201cI do remember opening it in New York, and I’d just done Wit<\/em> with Mike Nichols<\/a>, which is not a romcom at all, and something very serious, you know, and sad,\u201d she said. In that film, Thompson plays a woman battling ovarian cancer.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n <\/span> \u201cAnd I went to the opening of that and then the opening of Love Actually<\/em>, and Hugh Grant came up behind me and said, \u2018Is that the most psychotic thing we’ve ever made?\u2019 \u201d Thompson remembered and laughed. \u201cAnd I said, \u2018Well, you know, time will tell. Time will tell.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n She admitted, \u201cAnd time has told. It holds up because it’s so full of Richard’s deep love for humanity.\u201d Though often debated<\/a>, Love Actually<\/em> has remained for many people a yearly Christmas watch, though Grant has admitted he doesn\u2019t know why it\u2019s \u201cso popular.\u201d<\/a>\n<\/p>\n Thompson told GQ<\/em> that she \u201cworked it out\u201d and thinks she\u2019s starred in more things with Grant than anyone else. \u201cHe’s been my brother, my lover, my sort of husband person, somebody I’ve served as a servant in The Remains of the Day<\/em>,\u201d she said. \u201cWe’ve done so many things together. . . . And it’s always been a completely different relationship.\u201d In 1995\u2019s Sense and Sensibility<\/em>, they played lovers. They both also appeared in 2025\u2019s Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy<\/em>.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n Thompson also opened up about one of her biggest scenes in Love Actually<\/em>: when Karen realizes her husband bought jewelry for another woman and gives her just a Joni Mitchell CD. She hides her heartbreak, trying not to ruin the holiday.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n <\/span> \u201cIt was easy really to do,\u201d she admitted. \u201cI knew what being heartbroken felt like. So, it wasn’t difficult.\u201d\u00a0 She said they did \u201cfour or five\u201d takes and that Curtis was \u201csniveling in the corner\u201d the whole time, which was \u201cvery funny.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cIt was just that thing of that I so understand of people crying and then but not wanting to cry and then having to cover it up,\u201d she said. She added that there\u2019s \u201cno woman that doesn’t know what that’s like, especially if they’ve got kids.\u201d\n<\/p>\n Back in 2022, Thompson admitted she is not one of the people who rewatches Love Actually<\/em><\/a>.\n<\/p>\n “No, it was 20 years ago,” she told Jimmy Fallon when he askled about it during an episode of The Tonight Show<\/em>. The host asked if it was fun to look back and reminisce, but she joked, \u201cNot really. No, you’re just saying, ‘I don’t think I was very well paid for that.
