Futures tied to the <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"LiveBlogArticle-QuoteInBody-3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@DJ.1\/\">Dow Jones Industrial Average<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\" \/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> added 27 points, or 0.1%.<\/p>\n<p>Shares of <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"LiveBlogArticle-QuoteInBody-4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GNRC\/\">Generac<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\" \/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> advanced more than 2% in premarket trading after the name was upgraded to outperform at Baird, with the firm saying that the company has a number of &#8220;unique&#8221; catalysts ahead, including the opportunity presented from commercial and industrial diesel generator sets. That marks its second upgrade in wo days, as Citi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/07\/stock-market-today-live-updates.html\">upgraded it to buy<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Investors are awaiting two key catalysts. First, the Supreme Court could issue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/08\/the-supreme-court-may-rule-friday-on-trumps-tariffs-heres-whats-at-stake-for-the-economy.html\">a ruling on the legality<\/a> of President Donald Trump&#8217;s tariffs, which could have an impact on trade policy and the nation&#8217;s fiscal situation. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a little bit of wait-and-see approach from the companies before they start restocking on what happens to tariffs,&#8221; said Wells Fargo chief equity strategist Ohsung Kwon on CNBC&#8217;s &#8220;Power Lunch&#8221; Thursday. &#8220;We have the ruling potentially tomorrow. I think after that, the companies might start to restock again, and that&#8217;s gonna kickstart the manufacturing cycle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Second, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/08\/the-december-jobs-report-is-due-out-friday-what-its-expected-to-show.html\">December jobs report<\/a> will be out at 8:30 a.m. ET, and it&#8217;s expected to show modest improvement. Nonfarm payrolls likely grew by 73,000 last month, while the unemployment rate inched down to 4.5%, according to economists polled by Dow Jones.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, investors will watch for developments on Trump&#8217;s directive\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/08\/trump-mortgage-bonds-rates-fannie-freddie.html\">to his Representatives<\/a>&#8221; to buy $200 billion in mortgage bonds, which he claimed will drive rates and monthly payments down.<\/p>\n<p>In regular trading Thursday, investors rotated away from tech stocks.
