Donald Trump has said \u201cI don\u2019t need international law\u201d and that his power is limited only by his \u201cown morality\u201d.<\/p>\n
In a new interview<\/a> with the New York Times, Trump said the only constraint to his power as president of the US is \u201cmy own morality, my own mind\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s the only thing that can stop me,\u201d Trump said, adding: \u201cI\u2019m not looking to hurt people.\u201d He went on to concede \u201cI do\u201d in regards to whether his administration needed to adhere to international law, but said: \u201cIt depends on what your definition of international law is.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump, who spoke to the newspaper as his administration looks into \u201ca range of options<\/a>\u201d in attempts to gain control of Greenland, also emphasized the importance of ownership.<\/p>\n \u201cOwnership is very important,\u201d Trump said, adding: \u201cBecause that\u2019s what I feel is psychologically needed for success. I think that ownership gives you a thing that you can\u2019t do with, you\u2019re talking about a lease or a treaty. Ownership gives you things and elements that you can\u2019t get from just signing a document.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump also dismissed concerns that his decision to oust Nicol\u00e1s Maduro as Venezuela\u2019s president would set the precedent of a potential Chinese takeover of Taiwan or Russia\u2019s attempt to control Ukraine.<\/p>\n Justifying the US\u2019s attacks on Venezuela, Trump repeated<\/a> his controversial claims Maduro had allegedly sent gang members into the US.<\/p>\n \u201cThis was a real threat \u2026 You didn\u2019t have people pouring into China. You didn\u2019t have drugs pouring into China. You didn\u2019t have all of the bad things that we\u2019ve had. You didn\u2019t have the jails of Taiwan opened up and the people pouring into China,\u201d Trump said, adding that no criminals were \u201cpouring into Russia\u201d.<\/p>\n He said that he does not believe Chinese president Xi Jinping would seize control of Taiwan, telling the New York Times: \u201cThat\u2019s up to him, what he\u2019s going to be doing. But you know, I\u2019ve expressed to him that I would be very unhappy if he did that and I don\u2019t think he\u2019ll do that. I hope he doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump added: \u201cHe may do it after we have a different president but I don\u2019t think he\u2019s going to do it with me as president.\u201d<\/p>\n He also appeared unconcerned about the last arms control treaty<\/a> between the US and Russia that is set to expire next month.<\/p>\n \u201cIf it expires, it expires,\u201d Trump said, adding: \u201cWe\u2019ll just do a better agreement.\u201d He went on to say that China should be included in future agreements, saying: \u201cYou probably want to get a couple of other players involved also.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump\u2019s latest interview comes amid growing domestic tensions<\/a> following ICE\u2019s fatal shooting of a woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday, which has spurred intense protests, and amid fraying relations with European allies<\/a> over a potential US takeover of Greenland.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Donald Trump has said \u201cI don\u2019t need international law\u201d and that his power is limited only by his \u201cown morality\u201d.
