Doesn\u2019t matter. The only thing we know for sure about the Read case is that people can\u2019t get enough of it. There\u2019s still cult-like interest in the circumstances<\/a> surrounding the January 2022 death of John O\u2019Keefe, the Boston police officer who was Read\u2019s boyfriend. (Spoiler: A jury found Read not guilty of killing O\u2019Keefe, whose body was discovered in a snowbank.) <\/span><\/p>\n Because Hollywood lacks imagination, there are several TV and movie projects in the works in addition to \u201cAccused.\u201d Read and her LA-based attorney, Alan Jackson<\/a>, are developing one<\/a>; actress (and Pittsfield native) Elizabeth Banks<\/a> is attached to another, signing on to play Read in a Prime Video streaming series; Netflix is putting together a docuseries<\/a> about the case; and Investigation Discovery has already released \u201cA Body in the Snow: The Trial of Karen Read<\/a>,\u201d which dropped before Read\u2019s acquittal.<\/span><\/p>\n In the Lifetime movie, actress Katie Cassidy plays Read, while Canadian actor Luke Humphrey is O\u2019Keefe. Cassidy, who bears a slight resemblance to her character, may be familiar to horror fans from her roles in \u201cWhen a Stranger Calls,\u201d \u201cBlack Christmas,\u201d and the 2010 \u201cA Nightmare on Elm Street\u201d remake. In \u201cAccused,\u201d her talents as a scream queen come in handy in a frantic scene where Read discovers O\u2019Keefe\u2019s frozen body outside the home of fellow Boston cop Brian Albert. (In case you\u2019re interested, Cassidy\u2019s father was \u201cThe Partridge Family\u201d heartthrob David Cassidy<\/a>, and the actress once recorded a cover <\/a>of the Partridge Family hit, \u201cI Think I Love You<\/a>.\u201d)<\/span><\/p>\n Humphrey\u2019s film credits are fewer, but include a turn as John Wayne Bobbitt in Lifetime\u2019s \u201cI Was Lorena Bobbitt<\/a>.\u201d (John Wayne Bobbitt was famously, er, attacked<\/a> by his wife, but survived. Look it up.)<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAccused\u201d isn\u2019t an entirely flattering portrait of Read \u2014 she comes across as excessively concerned about her appearance, even using a curling iron and applying makeup before being led out of her house in handcuffs \u2014 but she\u2019s certainly a sympathetic figure. \u201cThere are so many women that identify with you because they know what it is like to be objectified, dehumanized, victimized,\u201d her father tells her at one point. \u201cWith you, they see strength and the courage to fight back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Less likable by far is Michael Proctor, the former Massachusetts State Trooper who was fired<\/a> for sending crude and misogynistic texts<\/a> about Read<\/a> while investigating O\u2019Keefe\u2019s death. When Proctor, played in the movie by South African actor Josh Blacker, reads his offensive texts on the witness stand, he seems like a cartoon villain and yet, unbelievably, those were his actual words. Aidan Kearney, the podcaster better known as Turtleboy<\/a>, also shows up in \u201cAccused,\u201d though he\u2019s portrayed as a benign cheerleader rather than the principle agitator<\/a> who galvanized public support for Read.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAccused\u201d is the latest installment of Lifetime\u2019s \u201cRipped from the Headlines<\/a>\u201d series, a slate of movies about infamous rogues, including the Menendez brothers, Jodi Arias, Amanda Knox, Vicky White, Oscar Pistorius, and so on.
