\u201cShe\u2019s been the toughest nut to crack,\u201d Glaser, who\u2019s hosting Sunday\u2019s Globes<\/a><\/span>, said Tuesday with a determined laugh. \u201cBut I\u2019m going to crack it.\u201d <\/p>\n The comedian got the hosting gig last year after showing her skill at ruthlessly roasting celebrities.<\/a><\/span> She got raves for her monologue. She brought out the knives, but they weren\u2019t overly sharp. She was promptly asked back. <\/p>\n Sunday\u2019s monologue will be a shape-shifting monster until the moment the CBS telecast starts and she takes the stage at the Beverly Hilton, ideally with a bit ready for Roberts, who\u2019s nominated for best actress in a drama for \u201cAfter the Hunt.\u201d<\/a><\/span> She\u2019ll be sitting in front of Glaser with her star-powered charm.<\/p>\n \u201cI just want to do the perfect joke but it\u2019s like people do not have a sense of humor about Julia Roberts,\u201d Glaser said in an interview with The Associated Press. \u201cShe\u2019ll be fine \u2014 other people are not fine on her behalf. Watch out.\u201d<\/p>\n Glaser spoke to the AP while wearing a gown and fur coat on a mock New York street at a CBS studio lot where she\u2019s prepping. <\/p>\n But the real preparation has been happening at Southern California\u2019s comedy clubs. <\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve been running the jokes constantly,\u201d she said. \u201cI live and die by those crowds. They really tell me what to keep and what not to. Things that I think will kill will just be nothing and things that I think are just a throwaway are like the best joke.\u201d<\/p>\n She shares one that she dumped.<\/p>\n \u201cI was going to make a joke about \u2018Pluribus\u2019 where I said like, \u2018Have you seen it? Pluribly not,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cBut we could not find a place for \u2018pluribly not\u2019 and so that one is in the graveyard. Probably rightfully so.\u201d<\/p>\n Because the monologue is directed, roast-style, at the people in the Globes crowd, the comedy club audience has to play celebrity roles.<\/p>\n She\u2019ll ask them, \u201c\u2018Will you play Julia Roberts for me?\u2019 You know, like it is, it\u2019s strange, but I kind of just set it up. Like I\u2019m hosting the Golden Globes. They\u2019re usually very excited about that.\u201d <\/p>\n Like every awards show host, she\u2019s wary that some major current event will upend everything. During the past weekend, she thought she certainly would have to talk about Venezuela<\/a><\/span> onstage. Now she thinks maybe not.<\/p>\n \u201cYou can\u2019t even anticipate things a week away as being relevant enough,\u201d she said. \u201cYou\u2019d be surprised that half the room had no clue why I was saying \u2018Venezuela.\u2019 People aren\u2019t getting the news like we all are.\u201d<\/p>\n Last year\u2019s version of the Julia Roberts problem was \u201cWicked,\u201d<\/a><\/span> and finding a joke that rode the line between meanness and affection. It took a long time, but she and the two friends she writes with found it.<\/p>\n \u201cIt ended up being perfect. I loved it,\u201d she said, repeating the line. \u201c\u2018My boyfriend loved it, my boyfriend\u2019s boyfriend loved it.\u2019 Perfect \u2018Wicked\u2019 joke.
