Lukas Nelson, son of Willie and primary songwriter for several tracks on the 2018 version of \u201cA Star Is Born,\u201d is teaming up with Judd Apatow and Glen Powell to write original songs for their forthcoming country western comedy.<\/p>\n
Nelson and fellow songwriter Ernest Keith Smith (who goes by ERNEST) are leading the songwriting effort together, Apatow told TheWrap during a Saturday interview at the Sundance Film Festival, where he was promoting the documentary \u201cParalyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe songwriting is being led by Lukas [Nelson] and ERNEST, and we\u2019ve had a lot of fun,\u201d Apatow said. \u201cI\u2019ve been writing with Glen for the last year and a half, and he\u2019s hilarious.\u201d<\/p>\n
The still-untitled project will feature Cristin Milioti and Madeline Cline, with shooting to begin in April.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m excited to have a movie in the theater to show that people still really want comedies in the theater,\u201d Apatow said. \u201cI think there\u2019s been a little bit of a doom loop, because everyone just says they don\u2019t \u2013 and then they don\u2019t \u2013 make [comedies], and then they take that as the proof that they don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nelson co-wrote several tracks from \u201cA Star Is Born\u201d (that aren\u2019t \u201cShallow, a Mark Ronson contribution) \u2013 many with Cooper and Lady Gaga \u2013 including \u201cBlack Eyes,\u201d \u201cOut of Time,\u201d \u201cAlibi,\u201d \u201cMusic to My Eyes\u201d and \u201cIs That Alright.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cooper had scouted Nelson in 2016 when his band performed at the Desert Trip music festival in California. Nelson wound up writing or co-writing eight tracks for the film and performed during concert-footage scenes, earning him a BAFTA for Best Original Music and a Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.<\/p>\n
He later collaborated with Gaga on subsequent records by both artists. For the new film, he\u2019ll team with ERNEST, who\u2019s written songs for Morgan Wallen, Jake Owen and Jelly Roll.<\/p>\n
