The National Weather Service has issued advisories for Northampton and Accomack counties, warning of hazardous conditions along the coast through Tuesday. A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for both counties until Tuesday evening, with forecasters cautioning about strong longshore currents and a high risk of rip currents in the surf zone. These conditions pose a serious threat even to experienced swimmers.<\/p>\n
In Northampton County, a Coastal Flood Advisory will also be in effect Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Up to one foot of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Shallow flooding may impact roads, parking lots, parks, and lawns near the waterfront, though property damage is expected to be minor.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, in both Accomack and Northampton, officials warn that rip currents and longshore currents will create life-threatening swimming conditions. Rip currents can quickly sweep swimmers away from shore into deeper water, while longshore currents increase the risk of being pulled along the coastline.<\/p>\n
Authorities urge residents and visitors to exercise caution. Drivers are advised not to attempt to pass barricades or drive through flooded areas of unknown depth, while those in flood-prone locations should take protective measures in advance. Beachgoers are strongly encouraged to stay out of the water until conditions improve.<\/p>\n
