RICHMOND, Va. \u2014 Two people were killed and seven others injured in a shooting early Saturday morning in Richmond\u2019s Shockoe Bottom neighborhood, police said.<\/p>\n
The gunfire was reported around 2:47 a.m. on North 18th Street.<\/p>\n
According to Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards, an officer was already in the area and noticed \u201ca large commotion\u201d \u2014 what appeared to be a fight in the street with cars speeding away. She responded within seconds, arriving to find an adult woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
That woman’s family identified her as 23-year-old Genesis Jones, Crime Insider Jon Burkett reported. <\/p>\n
Sources told CBS 6 that Jones was in Shockoe Bottom celebrating her brother\u2019s birthday and was simply walking through the neighborhood when she was shot. <\/p>\n
Chief Edwards said additional responding officers found an adult man with gunshot wounds. He, too, was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n

They were transported to hospitals by the Richmond Ambulance Authority. Later, police learned that three more victims arrived at hospitals via private vehicles.<\/p>\n In total, Edwards said nine people were shot:<\/p>\n Two deceased: one adult female (Genesis Jones) and one adult male<\/p>\n Three adult males wounded<\/p>\n Four adult females wounded<\/p>\n What led up to the shooting<\/b><\/p>\n Chief Edwards said, \u201cAt this point, it seems like a fight started. Individuals intervened in that fight, and shots were fired. They were all in the middle of the street\u2026 in the 0\u2013100 block of North 18th Street.\u201d<\/p>\n He called the incident \u201cfrustrating,\u201d noting that it was a relatively quiet night until the shooting.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is what I say all the time \u2014 if you\u2019re carrying firearms, you can\u2019t engage in a normal fight, because it escalates like it did tonight. One person starts shooting, multiple people start shooting,\u201d Edwards said. \u201cThere were at least two shooters, and we expect some of the information we have will change as the investigation continues.\u201d<\/p>\n Chaos in Shockoe Bottom<\/b><\/p>\n Witnesses told CBS 6 they heard what sounded like automatic gunfire getting closer and closer. Bartenders at a bar near 18th and Franklin said customers ducked behind the bar for safety.<\/p>\n Burkett described the scene as \u201cmad chaos\u201d \u2014 with cars riddled with bullets, patrons scrambling for shelter, and forensic teams collecting shell casings from vehicles and streets.<\/p>\n When asked about collateral damage, Chief Edwards confirmed \u201cseveral cars have been hit by bullets.\u201d Investigators are reviewing footage from multiple surveillance cameras and using other technology to identify suspects.<\/p>\n Crime scene stretches across multiple blocks<\/b><\/p>\n Police have shut down parts of Shockoe Bottom as they process the large crime scene.
