The England goalkeeper then boosted his popularity when he dropped into a local pub as supporters celebrated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2025\/aug\/10\/crystal-palace-liverpool-community-shield-match-report\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">August\u2019s penalty shootout victory over Liverpool<\/a> in the Community Shield and put \u00a31,000 behind the bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Henderson, made captain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2026\/jan\/19\/marc-guehi-signs-manchester-city-crystal-palace\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">when Marc Gu\u00e9hi was sold to Manchester City in January<\/a> after Palace were humbled in the Cup by non-league Macclesfield, must be wondering how things have turned sour at Selhurst Park so quickly. Supporters turned on the manager, Oliver Glasner, during the first leg of the Conference League playoff against Zrinjski Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina last week and demanded his sacking after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2026\/feb\/19\/zrinjski-mostar-crystal-palace-conference-league-playoff-first-leg-match-report\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">another unconvincing performance in the 1-1 draw<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"15f5fcec-e2cb-4d16-bb45-c6745b4bb014\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-47fhrn\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A banner unveiled in the Holmesdale End at the start of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2026\/feb\/22\/crystal-palace-wolves-premier-league-match-report\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Sunday\u2019s 1-0 win against Wolves<\/a> \u2013 only Palace\u2019s second victory in 16 games \u2013 took aim at the board and lamented \u201cmissed opportunities\u201d since a first major trophy was secured at Wembley last May. It also described Glasner as \u201cfinished\u201d after he had told fans to \u201cstay humble\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Glasner was on his best behaviour as he looked ahead to Thursday\u2019s second leg against Zrinjski, having struck another uneasy truce with the Palace chair, Steve Parish, to see out his contract until the end of the season, meaning it was left to Henderson to issue the rallying call.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cUnity: I think it\u2019s important that we have that,\u201d Henderson said. \u201cIt\u2019s been a difficult period and I think the players have to take a lot of responsibility, because we\u2019ve got to do better, first and foremost. For whatever reason it was, we had too many injuries and we just couldn\u2019t cope with the amount of games and the quality we were up against in the Premier League over the last couple of months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNow we\u2019ve got everyone back and we\u2019ve got a squad, we\u2019ve been picking up some good results, so hopefully that can give the club a boost. We\u2019re playing European football \u2026 and it should be a time for everyone to come together and enjoy that.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"55540e7d-4dc0-4d4c-a1bc-6288febbeb00\" data-spacefinder-role=\"showcase\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-5h0uf4\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-9ktzqp\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Crystal Palace fans unveil a banner critical of the board and Oliver Glasner before the win against Wolves on Sunday.<\/span> Photograph: Andrew Couldridge\/Action Images\/Reuters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Henderson added: \u201cIt\u2019s time to shift the narrative and really smile and enjoy these moments because they don\u2019t come round often, instead of putting all the negative spin on everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One of Glasner\u2019s gripes after the first leg was that some of his players have had their eyes on their next move \u2013 an accusation many Palace fans will feel applies to him too. Jean-Philippe Mateta, who Glasner expects back soon from the knee injury that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2026\/feb\/02\/jean-philippe-mateta-milan-crystal-palace-jorgen-strand-larsen-wolves-transfer-deadline-day\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">scuppered his January move to Milan<\/a>, Adam Wharton, Daniel Mu\u00f1oz and the out-of-contract Daichi Kamada are among those linked with summer moves. Henderson, who is expected to be Jordan Pickford\u2019s backup at the World Cup, warned anyone not committed to the cause they were in for a rude awakening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIf you don\u2019t put the performances in order, you don\u2019t get the move you want, so they need to be very careful,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not aware of any of that, but I would suggest they have to be careful if they were thinking like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wharton\u2019s form in particular has dipped in recent weeks but Glasner pointed out that the England midfielder had already played more than 1,000 minutes more than he had last season, owing to Palace\u2019s involvement in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/europa-conference-league\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Conference League<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.NewsletterSignupBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cPlayers have to cope with a completely new situation in their career,\u201d he said. \u201cI remember I spoke to Eddie Howe at Newcastle when they played the first time in the Champions League. They were massively struggling and I spoke about his experience. But we are still the second-best amount of points ever [at this stage for Palace].<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe have the European competitions and we have had some big injury problems at the end of last year. He won the Europa League in 2022 with Eintracht Frankfurt before falling out with the hierarchy the following season despite reaching the German Cup final and is aiming to reach a fourth final in five seasons. But, perhaps wisely given Palace\u2019s difficulty in breaking down low blocks, he was wary of making the bold prediction that Palace can go all the way before Zrinjski\u2019s visit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI think for 120 years <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/crystalpalace\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Crystal Palace<\/a> entered every cup competition to win it,\u201d he said. \u201cThis group of players has done it once last year.
