\n Eva Mendes<\/a> and Ryan Gosling<\/a> made their first official appearance together in public in more than a decade on Thursday night, when the \u201cBarbie\u201d star surprised his partner for her 52nd birthday.\n <\/p>\n \n Gosling had Mendes brought onstage during the filming of \u201cThe Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon\u201d so that the audience could sing \u201cHappy Birthday,\u201d led by a high school marching band.\n <\/p>\n \n Gosling was on the show to promote his new film, \u201cProject Hail Mary,\u201d <\/em>in which he plays a middle school teacher who wakes up on a spaceship and with no memory. In honor of the film\u2019s theme, the actor had filled the audience with school teachers.\n <\/p>\n \n Mendes had \u201cno idea\u201d this was going to happen, Fallon said. Looking nonplussed as she came onto the stage, she gave an impromptu speech to the audience of teachers, having to lean into the host\u2019s microphone.\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cWe owe so much to you guys,\u201d she said, \u201cand you\u2019re so underpaid!\u201d \u2014 prompting laughter from the audience.\n <\/p>\n \n Earlier, Gosling revealed that Mendes \u201cloves teachers\u201d and even displays her Hall Monitor sash in their home.\n <\/p>\n \n Fallon brought out New Jersey\u2019s North Bergen High School marching band, who carried a flag declaring \u201cHappy Birthday, Eva!\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n Mendes and Gosling reportedly met while filming the thriller \u201cThe Place Beyond the Pines\u201d in 2011, and they now have two daughters. Despite their status as Hollywood A-listers, the couple have mostly kept their relationship and family life out of the public eye.\n <\/p>\n \n At the 2024 Oscars, before his performance of the song \u201cI\u2019m Just Ken\u201d from Greta Gerwig\u2019s \u201cBarbie,\u201d Gosling walked the red carpet with his mom, stepdad and sister. Mendes stayed backstage.\n <\/p>\n \n Earlier in the show, Gosling told Fallon about the influence of one of his teachers, who, he said, \u201creally flipped things around for me.\u201d She ran a reading competition for the students, and Gosling got second place.\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cI\u2019ve never read that many books in my life,\u201d he said.\n <\/p>\n \n He also revealed that, when the teacher left the school, Gosling attempted to reenact the famous \u201cO Captain! My Captain!\u201d scene from the 1989 film \u201cDead Poets Society.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cI stood on my desk and I was crying, and I said \u2018O Captain! My Captain!\u2019\u201d he recounted, \u201cand no one got the reference.
