{"id":24060,"date":"2026-03-17T05:53:26","date_gmt":"2026-03-17T05:53:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/?p=24060"},"modified":"2026-03-17T05:53:30","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T05:53:30","slug":"crunchyroll-anime-series-director-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/?p=24060","title":{"rendered":"Crunchyroll Anime Series Director Interview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Crunchyroll dropped the trailer for its upcoming \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/sekiro\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sekiro\" data-tag=\"sekiro\">Sekiro<\/a>\u201d anime adaptation Monday ahead of the show\u2019s panel at the SXSW Festival in Austin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Based on FromSoftware\u2019s critically acclaimed 2019 action-adventure game \u201cSekiro: Shadows Die Twice,\u201d which follows shinobi warrior Wolf on his quest to rescue his lord during Japan\u2019s Sengoku period, the TV series is a hand-drawn anime from director Kenichi Kutsuna and Studio Qzil.la. In the new \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/sekiro-no-defeat\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sekiro-no-defeat\" data-tag=\"sekiro-no-defeat\">Sekiro: No Defeat<\/a>\u201d trailer, which readers can watch via the video above, the anime version of Wolf begins this journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    The \u201cSekiro: No Defeat\u201d director told <em>Variety<\/em> during an exclusive interview that the goal with this project was to \u201ctake as many elements from the underlying work of the game as possible,\u201d and \u201cit doesn\u2019t deviate too far from what the fans would expect\u201d \u2014 but that using \u201cevery single element would be impossible and very difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    \u201cWith the game, of course, you\u2019re playing in the character, or the player\u2019s, POV, so you have one point of view and that wouldn\u2019t really work for an anime, so we tried to adapt it as much as possible as an audio-visual type of medium,\u201d Kutsuna said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of respect paid to the original game, but there were some liberties taken in the sense of point of view and joining the imagery together, as opposed to being placed into the world in the first person.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  size-large alignnone \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure  lrv-u-font-family-secondary u-color-medium-grey lrv-u-border-b-1 u-border-color-light-grey-tint-two u-margin-b-150 lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1024px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \"><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  \">\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Since the \u201cSekiro\u201d anime was first announced out of Gamescom last year, interest has been high \u2014 but so have fans\u2019 concerns for how the video game will translate to a TV series format. Kutsuna says he is aware of this feedback and takes it very seriously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    \u201cFromSoftware, they make such high quality game experiences, and they\u2019ve established this community and fandom worldwide,\u201d Kutsuna said. \u201cSo we understand that the potential audience for what we\u2019re making in this anime is going to put this under the microscope, and it\u2019s going to be a very, very\u2013 I don\u2019t wanna say harsh or strict lens, but you could say the audience will be looking at it. So I of course, am nervous if we are able to answer that level of resolution that they perhaps might be looking for. But I think we\u2019ve done everything we could from the production side in terms of maintaining a level of quality that wouldn\u2019t tarnish the FromSoftware and \u2018Sekiro\u2019 brand. And I think when we dropped the teaser, there was this weird response that, \u2018Hey, are they using AI or not?\u2019 And that kind of turned into a little thing, but that has all been dissipated and quelled. I think there\u2019s a lot of unexpected elements that you really can\u2019t plan for when developing a project of this nature, but I think I still remain confident that we\u2019ve done what we could to do justice to the franchise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Kutsuna says one aspect of the IP he wanted to make sure to emulate was the possibility for Wolf (through the player) to choose from multiple different paths \u2014 some with much better outcomes than others.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  size-large alignnone \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure  lrv-u-font-family-secondary u-color-medium-grey lrv-u-border-b-1 u-border-color-light-grey-tint-two u-margin-b-150 lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1024px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<p>                        <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Sekiro-No-Defeat-1.png\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- height=\"614\" width=\"1024\" \/><\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  \">\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    \u201cOne of the core pillars of the video game experience, I think, is that it\u2019s not a very kind game, shall we say, to the players,\u201d Kutsuna said. \u201cAnd I think it also allows a lot of interpretation on the players part in terms of how they want to proceed through the game. And those who have played will know that type of experience. So, in taking that and transforming it into an audio-visual adaptation, we wanted it to be open to interpretation in a similar way that the game presented itself to its players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Kutsuna is set to discuss the making of \u201cSekiro: No Defeat\u201d during Monday\u2019s SXSW Festival panel, which will also include an in-room-only screening of the first episode, alongside series composer Shuta Hasunuma. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    \u201cWhen you take a game medium and translate it for an audio-visual medium, I think the role of music and sound design changes quite a bit. And when I was scoring, I kept that in the back of my head,\u201d Hasunuma told <em>Variety<\/em>. \u201cA lot of it comes down to really getting that period piece, that era feel, correct with the music, and that can also translate to the character\u2019s emotion. I think the role of music in an audio-visual setting is you have a lot more resolution in terms of how you guide the audience and the viewer through that experience. There\u2019s a lot more nuance that can be expressed in a linear format than in an interactive format. So there\u2019s a lot of very intense moments, a lot of very private, more nuanced, dramatic moments. There\u2019s a very wide range you\u2019re trying to make sure was properly expressed in the music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Kutsuna says the \u201cSekiro\u201d anime\u2019s screenplay and storyboarding process was done \u201cvery closely\u201d between him and game developer FromSoftware. \u201cIn the game, there are three major branches, of which we\u2019ve kind of leaned towards one of those storylines in the anime,\u201d Kutsuna said, noting that FromSoftware \u201cwould check and approve everything and make sure it is in line with the world setting that\u2019s been established.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    During the project, which marks the first time FromSoftware has had any of its IP developed into another on-screen medium, Kutsuna said: \u201cWhen it came time to make certain decisions and interpreting the best way to express it in anime, they took a lot of our advice and kind of leaned towards us, but we\u2019d also look to them in terms of anything in the essence of the game that we might be missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Watch the new \u201cSekiro: No Defeat\u201d trailer via the video above.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/tv\/news\/sekiro-no-defeat-trailer-crunchyroll-anime-director-interview-1236677478\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crunchyroll dropped the trailer for its upcoming \u201cSekiro\u201d anime adaptation Monday ahead of the show\u2019s panel at the SXSW Festival in Austin.
