WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 Joe Kent, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center, announced his resignation on Tuesday, saying he \u201ccannot in good conscience\u201d back the Trump administration\u2019s war in Iran.<\/p>\n
Kent said on social media Iran \u201cposed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kent, a former political candidate with connections to right-wing extremists<\/a>, was confirmed to his post<\/a> last July on a 52-44 vote.<\/p>\n As head of the National Counterterrorism Center, Kent was in charge of an agency tasked with analyzing and detecting terrorist threats.<\/p>\n Before entering President Donald Trump’s administration, Kent ran two unsuccessful campaigns for Congress in Washington state.
