As the Illinois Fighting Illini men\u2019s basketball team look to win their first National Championships\u2014and return to the title game for the first time since 2005\u2014all eyes are on guard Keaton Wagler.<\/p>\n
Keaton, a 6\u20196\u201d freshman from Shawnee, Kansas, grew up in a basketball-obsessed family. Basketball \u201chas a deep meaning in our family,\u201d he told ESPN<\/em><\/a>. In fact, his parents, Logan and Jennifer, met while playing basketball at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. Height, too, runs in the family: His mom is 5\u201911\u201d and his dad is 6\u20198\u201d. His family is on the final two slides in this Instagram post from his senior year of high school:<\/p>\n\n Here, get to know Keaton Wagler\u2019s parents:<\/p>\n\n Like her son, Jennifer played basketball. She is now a fifth grade teacher. Jennifer and Logan have three children: daughter Brooklyn, and sons Landon and Keaton. Growing up, she recalls<\/a> Keaton asking her \u201c\u2018Is there a job where you can just shoot baskets?\u2019 I was like, \u2018Well, yes, but don\u2019t worry about that. You just have fun.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n \u201cI talk to my mom every day on Snapchat,\u201d Keaton told The Kansas City Star<\/em><\/a> in March 2026. \u201cI think that\u2019s just an easy way for us to check in. You don\u2019t even have to call or anything, but just say hi on snap or whatever. So I talk to my family pretty much every day. She uses a funny filter each day. So it\u2019s fun to see her having fun with it.\u201d<\/p>\n Logan comes from a basketball family. His grandfather<\/a>, Al Wagler, played basketball at Hutchinson Community College (HCC, also called \u201cHutch\u201d) from 1939 to 1940, and was the men\u2019s basketball tournament director. Logan\u2019s dad, William \u201cBill\u201d Wagler, also played at Hutch, competing from 1966 to 1967. Logan and his brother Lucas became the third generation to play basketball for the Kansas school; Logan finished his collegiate career at Rockhurst University in Kansas City. His son Landon (Keaton\u2019s brother) became the fourth. \u201cMy wife and I have never expected our kids to worry about being a part of a legacy, but rather finding their own path. It\u2019s pretty amazing that his path led him to HCC,\u201d Logan Wagler said.<\/p>\n Logan worked at Lenexa Rec Center in Lenexa, Kansas and now is the city\u2019s director of parks and recreation. At the rec center, ESPN <\/em>notes<\/a>, \u201cLogan organized high-level pickup games once or twice a week with people he met through the basketball world, including coaches and former college players. When he didn\u2019t have enough, he’d pull in his kids.\u201d<\/p>\n Keaton, Logan says, \u201cwould shock everybody. He could defend. He could stay in front of people. He was scrappy. He had that fire in him where he could still grab rebounds, and he could just flat-out score. I still get texts and calls from friends that played with him in those pickup days when he was just a tiny little kid. They just laugh, watching him now.\u201d<\/p>\n With speculation that Keaton could forgo a further college career and enter the NBA Draft, Logan told the Kansas City Star<\/em><\/a>, \u201cAs parents, honestly, it\u2019s been really hard to process. This has happened so fast and been so unexpected that we\u2019ve been having a hard time processing it, and honestly, we\u2019ve intentionally not discussed it with Keaton too much, other than checking in on him. That\u2019s a decision to be made in the future. Right now, just focus on the task in front of us. So that\u2019s kind of been the priority for him and honestly, kind of for us as well.
