{"id":26843,"date":"2026-04-10T05:45:27","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T05:45:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/?p=26843"},"modified":"2026-04-10T05:45:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T05:45:29","slug":"democrats-choose-their-words-carefully-on-trumps-iran-ceasefire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/?p=26843","title":{"rendered":"Democrats choose their words carefully on Trump\u2019s Iran ceasefire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-right:0;padding-left:0\">\nWhen President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire Tuesday night, Democrats didn\u2019t rush to slam the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Many were just too relieved to say anything at all.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Trump was essentially touting an offer Iran had made weeks ago that, according to experts, doesn\u2019t achieve Trump\u2019s stated objectives and actually reinforces Iran\u2019s stranglehold over the Strait of Hormuz, Democrats restrained themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The normal rush to point out that \u201cTrump Always Chickens Out\u201d \u2014 on a Tuesday, no less \u2014 was met more with silence than memes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-rkv-video\" data-wp-interactive=\"msnbcVideo\" data-wp-context=\"{\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.init\">\n<div class=\"msnbc-video-block-flex-box\">\n<div class=\"msnbc-video-block-video-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"msnbc-video-block-video\">\n                                                                    <button class=\"msnbc-video-placeholder-button\" data-post-id=\"0\"><\/p>\n<p>                                    <span class=\"visually-hidden\">Play<\/span><br \/>\n                                                                <\/button>\n                                                                                         <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepYassAnsari\/status\/2041779515089940893?s=20\">pointed out online<\/a>, this wasn\u2019t the time for jokes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not appreciate anyone \u2014 Democrat or Republican \u2014 taking this moment to make TACO jokes to say Trump \u2018chickened out,\u2019\u201d wrote Ansari, the first Iranian-American Democrat in Congress.<\/p>\n<p>She reminded readers that the president was threatening genocide against \u201ca whole civilization\u201d \u2014 90 million people \u2014 and she said she was grateful there\u2019s a ceasefire and that \u201cscores of innocent people didn\u2019t die tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other Democrats echoed Ansari\u2019s sentiment,\u00a0stressing the extraordinary threat the president had made.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to war and peace, I just don\u2019t think of this in political terms,\u201d Rep. Sara Jacobs, D-Calif., told MS NOW.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think anyone should,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Sarah McBride, D-Del., expressed a similar thought. \u201cThere is nothing celebratory or humorous about the tragic situation that we find ourselves in, that the Iranian people find themselves in,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>And one House Democrat, granted anonymity to speak candidly about the political dynamics, noted that polling about the war and the Trump administration writ large is already bad enough. There\u2019s no need to pile on, given the gravity of what had \u2014 at least for the moment \u2014\u00a0been averted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t need extra victory laps,\u201d the Democratic lawmaker told MS NOW. \u201cWe have enough victories out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to win every single battle to win the war,\u201d that lawmaker said.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t mean Democrats are necessarily praising the president for pulling the U.S. back from the brink or casting him as some strategic tactician who knows the art of the deal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Democrats are aware that \u2014 if the roles were reversed and a Democratic president had arranged this ceasefire \u2014 there\u2019s little doubt Trump would be slamming the agreement. Trump was one of the most forceful voices opposing President Barack Obama\u2019s Iran deal in 2015 and 2016. Getting back to that agreement now would be a major diplomatic achievement for the U.S.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-rkv-video\" data-wp-interactive=\"msnbcVideo\" data-wp-context=\"{\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.init\">\n<div class=\"msnbc-video-block-flex-box\">\n<div class=\"msnbc-video-block-video-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"msnbc-video-block-video\">\n                                                                    <button class=\"msnbc-video-placeholder-button\" data-post-id=\"1\"><\/p>\n<p>                                    <span class=\"visually-hidden\">Play<\/span><br \/>\n                                                                <\/button><br \/>\n                                                                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"860\" height=\"484\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775677721731_n_tur_hamby_nichols_stengel_iran_parliament_speaker_ceasefire_deal_with_us_violated_26.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-16x9_m size-16x9_m\" alt=\"\" \/>                         <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The new agreement, <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116365796713313030\">according to Trump<\/a>, was contingent on Iran agreeing to \u201cthe COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz\u201d \u2014\u00a0the closure of which has, in recent weeks, spurred a dramatic rise in the cost of oil.<\/p>\n<p>So far, that part of the bargain isn\u2019t holding up, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/middle-east\/iran-tightens-its-grip-on-hormuz-despite-cease-fire-5027521f\">Iran maintaining operational control<\/a> of the strait on Wednesday and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailystar.co.uk\/news\/latest-news\/breaking-iran-closes-strait-hormuz-36985945\">closing it after Israel continued attacks on Lebanon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., told MS NOW there\u2019s no doubt Trump would be \u201ctrashing\u201d the ceasefire if it were Democrats who had struck the deal.<\/p>\n<section class=\"related\" aria-label=\"Related content\">\n<h3 class=\"related__title\">Recommended<\/h3>\n<div id=\"recommended\" class=\"related__items\">\n<p>Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, also invoked the Obama-era deal. \u201cFrom what I\u2019m hearing thus far \u2014 we\u2019ve got to hear more \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s going to be less than what we got out of the JCPOA,\u201d Meeks said, referring to the Iran deal and its official acronym.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hear my Republican colleagues praising this,\u201d Meeks said. \u201cIt seems somewhat hypocritical to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And Jacobs said, \u201cThe fact that you have this ceasefire deal that, frankly, is not very good for the United States, just goes to show why we should have never started this war to begin with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, some Democrats suggested on Wednesday to MS NOW that the messaging is tricky.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to be for the ceasefire. Of course, we shouldn\u2019t be for war,\u201d said Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut,\u201d he told MS NOW, \u201cwe should point out that the world was safer before Donald Trump took on this ill conceived, illegal war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McBride said\u00a0if Trump weren\u2019t currently president, he \u201cwould be rightfully criticizing this deal, denouncing this deal, and calling out whatever president had taken the United States into another quagmire in the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She noted that, if Iran maintains the ability to toll boats passing through the strait, it means that \u2014\u00a0because the oil market is global \u2014\u00a0\u201cevery time Americans go to the gas pump, part of their money will be going toward rebuilding what the U.S. military destroyed in Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-rkv-video\" data-wp-interactive=\"msnbcVideo\" data-wp-context=\"{\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.init\">\n<div class=\"msnbc-video-block-flex-box\">\n<div class=\"msnbc-video-block-video-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"msnbc-video-block-video\">\n                                                                    <button class=\"msnbc-video-placeholder-button\" data-post-id=\"2\"><\/p>\n<p>                                    <span class=\"visually-hidden\">Play<\/span><br \/>\n                                                                <\/button><br \/>\n                                                                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"860\" height=\"484\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775666117669_n_jansing_baker_haass_rashid_rohde_trump_us_iran_ceasefire_deal_strait_of_hormuz_26040.webp\" class=\"attachment-16x9_m size-16x9_m\" alt=\"\" \/>                         <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There are a lot of unanswered questions about what exactly is in the deal itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody really knows what\u2019s happening,\u201d Rep. Greg Landsman, D-Ohio, told MS NOW. \u201cAnd that\u2019s entirely because of the chaos of Donald Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., a senior House Democrat who has served in Congress since 1997, said the ceasefire \u201cdoesn\u2019t at all diminish my concerns about his mental stability and about how erratic his policy has been and about how dangerous it\u2019s been.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McGovern said he\u2019s choosing his words carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to call him chicken for backing down, I\u2019m just relieved for the world that he backed out,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not going to call him TACO; I may call him insane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Maya Eaglin contributed to this report.<\/em>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-content-justification-stretch is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-2c413db0 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--600);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--600)\">\n<div style=\"font-size:clamp(0.875rem, 0.875rem + ((1vw -
