\n Brooklyn Council Member Chi Oss\u00e9 was arrested earlier this morning while \u201cattempting to prevent deed theft eviction,\u201d according to a post on Instagram.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A video posted to his account shows the pol in a confrontation with an officer, audibly telling them to \u201cget off him.\u201d Officers then pull him over a fence, where he had been lying on the ground, and place him under arrest. Onlookers gathered nearby can be heard protesting, shouting \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d and \u201cNo,\u201d as he is led to a police vehicle.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred at 212 Jefferson Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant, where a rally was being held to support a homeowner facing a dispute over the property.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

In a statement shared on his account, Oss\u00e9\u2019s office said: \u201cCouncil Member Chi Oss\u00e9 was just arrested while defending his constituent, Carmella Charrington, from eviction. This is the result of deed theft and the ongoing displacement of Black homeowners in Bed-Stuy. Our office is closely monitoring this situation and will provide updates as this develops.\u201d<\/p>\n

They added that their office has \u201cpushed for an eviction moratorium for homeowners facing deed theft.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot another Black homeowner should have their home stolen. Until deed theft ends, we will fight every day.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Oss\u00e9, who represents New York City\u2019s District 36 covering Bed-Stuy and North Crown Heights, has been a staunch advocate against deed theft in his district, known as the \u201cillegal transfer<\/a> of property ownership without a homeowner\u2019s knowledge or consent.\u201d In March, he stood by Borough President Antonio Reynoso and others petitioning<\/a> to help \u201cBlack and Brown homeowners in rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods where property values are skyrocketing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

At that press conference, Oss\u00e9 pointed to his own family\u2019s experience, saying his grandmother had been affected by deed theft \u2014 fueling his commitment to the issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the results and reasons for that is deed theft that is impacting the streets of Black Brooklyn,\u201d he said. \u201c<\/span>Deed theft is one of the most cruel crimes committed in our city. It is abuse inflicted primarily on the seniors who built our communities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the arrest of Oss\u00e9 \u201cincredibly concerning\u201d and said his administration would follow up on both the circumstances of the arrest and the housing dispute that prompted the protest.<\/p>\n

Speaking at an unrelated press conference in Queens, Mamdani said Oss\u00e9 had been \u201con the front lines\u201d of efforts to combat deed theft \u2014 an issue he said is especially prevalent in the council member\u2019s district \u2014 and praised his work to keep attention on the problem while defending a constituent from eviction.<\/p>\n

In a statement on X<\/a>, Council Speaker Julie Menin said she has \u201cseen the concerning video of my colleague being aggressively pushed to the ground and arrested during a protest.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Menin added that her office is in touch with Oss\u00e9\u2019s team and the NYPD to ensure he is released \u201cquickly and safely.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Oss\u00e9 is currently being held at the 79th Precinct, his office said. At 10:57 a.m., his office posted on Instagram urging Brooklyn residents to \u201cshow up\u201d at the precinct to \u201ccall for his release\u201d and to support efforts addressing deed theft.<\/p>\n

The NYPD did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n
