{"id":28338,"date":"2026-04-23T03:58:31","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T03:58:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/?p=28338"},"modified":"2026-04-23T03:58:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T03:58:35","slug":"randy-vasquez-pitches-7-inning-gem-padres-shut-out-rockies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/?p=28338","title":{"rendered":"Randy V\u00e1squez pitches 7-inning gem; Padres shut out Rockies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">DENVER \u2013 After five scoreless innings of one-hit ball at Coors Field, the Padres finally broke out in the sixth inning to put a lone straight number on the scoreboard as they beat the Rockies for the 10th time in 11 games, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/gameday\/824369\/final\/box\" target=\"_blank\">taking the series opener on Tuesday 1-0<\/a>.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">It was the fourth 1-0 win for a visiting team in Coors Field history, and the first time the Padres won a 1-0 game with the only run being walked home since April 7, 2005.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">On paper, it was an unlikely matchup for a classic pitchers\u2019 duel, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/player\/681190\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"tag\">Randy V\u00e1squez<\/a> taking on the Rockies\u2019 bullpen. On the field, however, pitching aficionados got a rare treat as V\u00e1squez squared off inning after inning, primarily against Colorado\u2019s Chase Dollander, who pitched six innings after opener Jimmy Herget. Ultimately, V\u00e1squez threw seven scoreless innings and combined with relievers Jason Adam and Adrian Morejon for a Coors Field shutout.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">\u201cIt was fantastic,\u201d manager Craig Stammen said of V\u00e1squez\u2019s performance. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to pitch like that at Coors Field. He did a tremendous job of throwing strikes. Kept his pitch count down. Got a lot of swing-and-miss. Just an outstanding outing from Randy.\u201d\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">Tuesday was Stammen&#8217;s first game at Coors Field as a manager. In his Coors Field pitching debut on July 6, 2009, he threw seven innings for the Nationals &#8212; and lost a 1-0 game.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">V\u00e1squez posted his team-best third quality start, lowering his ERA to 1.88, giving up three hits and striking out five, while only letting one man get to second &#8212; on Ezequiel Tovar\u2019s stolen base in the second after being hit by a pitch. It was his first career road start of at least seven innings.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">\u201cI was just trusting my game plan and executing my pitches,\u201d V\u00e1squez said through team interpreter Pedro Gutierrez. \u201cI knew that they swing early in the at-bat, so I just tried to locate my pitches.\u201d\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">V\u00e1squez was unphased by the often-unfriendly confines of Coors, the stuff of many a pitcher\u2019s nightmares as they struggle with different movement in the dry, high-elevation conditions.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">\u201cAltitude or not, I don\u2019t focus on that,\u201d V\u00e1squez said. \u201cWith the cutter and the changeup, I adjust a little, if necessary, but if they\u2019re working like today, it\u2019s not really a concern.\u201d\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">The Padres cracked the code in the sixth, after Dollander retired 12 consecutive batters, including six straight strikeouts. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/player\/630105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"tag\">Jake Cronenworth<\/a> laced a one-out hustle double to right to ignite the Padres only&#8217; rally.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">\u201cThat was huge,\u201d Stammen said. \u201cIt&#8217;s just momentum, because early in the game there was a stagnant atmosphere. We weren&#8217;t getting anything going. We struck out on the side. Their pitchers had us in a tailspin.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">\u201cJake gets one through the hole, and then like he always does, hustling everywhere, gets that double and made us feel like, \u2018All right, we can score a run here.\u2019\u201d\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">Cronenworth advanced on a two-out infield single from Fernando Tatis Jr., before Jackson Merrill was hit by a pitch to load the bases.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">With Manny Machado at the plate, Dollander allowed the only walk of the game, plating Cronenworth and providing the Padres with their margin of victory.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">\u201cIt was a good pitch, up and away,\u201d Machado said. \u201cI wasn&#8217;t really gonna do much with that. He threw the ball really well. He struck out, I don&#8217;t know how many. He got us in the corner, and we got up.\u201d\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">Mason Miller never got up in the game, despite the save situation in the ninth inning of a 1-0 game. The Padres decided days ago that if Miller pitched on Sunday, they\u2019d give him Tuesday off so he could have two days down with the off-day.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">\u201cWe&#8217;ve used him a lot over here over the last week or so,\u201d Stammen said. \u201cHe&#8217;s not a robot.\u201d\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">Miller was missed, but Adam and Morejon had no trouble filling his shoes.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">\u201cThere\u2019s not many [teams] that have the luxury of having that when their closer\u2019s down,\u201d Stammen said. \u201cWe have the luxury of doing that.\u201d\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Styles__MarkdownContainer-dxqlie-0 iMsGag\">It was Morejon\u2019s first save opportunity of the year, and he rose to the occasion, demonstrating the depth of the Padres \u2018pen.
