On Tuesday afternoon in New York, the Rolling Stones<\/a> gathered friends, journalists and fellow artists for a preview of their forthcoming 25th album, Foreign Tongues.<\/p>\n Before the trio stepped on stage, host Conan O\u2019Brien<\/a> deadpanned that perhaps, finally, this is the album where the band will \u201cfinally make it after decades of obscurity\u201d. The audience, which included Leonardo DiCaprio, director Baz Luhrmann<\/a> and actor Odessa A\u2019zion, laughed appreciatively.<\/p>\n Seven decades into their career and with more than 250m albums sold, the band hardly need to cement their legacy. But recent years have seen the group \u2013 now a three-piece in the wake of drummer Charlie Watts\u2019s<\/a> death<\/a> in 2021 \u2013 creatively re-energized. Hackney Diamonds, their 2023 album, was praised<\/a> by the Guardian\u2019s Alexis Petridis as a return to form that \u201ccrackles with a sense of purpose\u201d.<\/p>\n On Foreign Tongues, the band once again team up with Hackney Diamonds producer Andrew Watt (Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber<\/a>), as well as a slew of special guests including Steve Winwood, Paul McCartney<\/a>, the Cure\u2019s Robert Smith and Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers.<\/p>\n At the New York event, Mick Jagger<\/a> said that Foreign Tongues\u2019 14 songs would span numerous genres: \u201cThe thing about this record is \u2013 the Stones are a rock band that also has the capacity to do ballads, country music or dance music. So we don\u2019t get stuck in one kind of style.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhen it\u2019s not working, that\u2019s when we bring in the referee,\u201d said Keith Richards<\/a>, pointing at Watt, who laughed along. \u201cHe kicks us up the arse.\u201d<\/p>\n Jagger described new song Ringing Hollow as a \u201ccountry tune\u201d inspired by his and Richards\u2019s lifelong love of Hank Williams, while Beautiful Delilah draws from the delta blues. The singer also teased Hit Me in the Head, \u201ca real punk rocker\u201d with parts recorded by Watts before his death.<\/p>\n On stage, the three-piece were in good spirits and spry, with Jagger happy to play along when O\u2019Brien joked that the singer\u2019s striped blazer was \u201cfrom the estate of Willy Wonka\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cIt kicks ass,\u201d said O\u2019Brien of the new album, adding that it is reminiscent of the band\u2019s 1972 classic Exile on Main St<\/a>, and that he had listened to the record \u201c25 times\u201d since receiving it a few days ago. \u201cThere\u2019s a vibrancy, an urgency to it.\u201d<\/p>\n That\u2019s partly due to the fact that the album was recorded in about a month, said Jagger: \u201cOnly having four weeks gave us an urgency. We\u2019re having fun most of the time in the studio, but it\u2019s a lot of concentration too \u2013 you\u2019ve really got to make [a song\u2019s] five minutes count.\u201d<\/p>\n When asked how he keeps his octave-spanning singing voice in tip-top shape, Jagger said wryly: \u201cI was taking a lot of drugs in 1968 \u2026 so it\u2019s practice.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cRiffs, you can\u2019t force them,\u201d said Richards. \u201cThey come to you.\u201d Meanwhile, guitarist Ronnie Wood<\/a> compared the interplay with his fellow guitarist to \u201can ancient form of weaving\u201d.<\/p>\n The cover art for Foreign Tongues is a painting by New York-based artist Nathaniel Mary Quinn, who described the image as an \u201camalgamation\u201d of the band. \u201cI call it Mr Ugly,\u201d joked Jagger. \u201cIt\u2019s not <\/a><\/em>computer-generated<\/a>,\u201d he added, to whoops and applause from the audience.<\/p>\n The band also reflected on the loss of longtime drummer Watts with affection and humor. \u201cCharlie handed the baton to Steve [Jordan],\u201d said Wood, of the Stones\u2019 new drummer.
