The <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"LiveStory-SpecialReport-QuoteInBody-4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.DJI\/\">Dow Jones Industrial Average<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\" \/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> traded down 295 points, or 0.6%.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"LiveStory-SpecialReport-QuoteInBody-5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@CL.1\/\">West Texas Intermediate futures<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\" \/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> jumped 3% to trade above $101 per barrel. <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"LiveStory-SpecialReport-QuoteInBody-6\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@LCO.1\/\">Brent crude<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\" \/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> climbed 3% to above $108. Those gains built on Monday&#8217;s advance, after President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> called the month-old ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran &#8220;unbelievably weak&#8221; and said it was &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/11\/trump-iran-war-ceasefire-life-support.html\">on massive life support<\/a>&#8221; after rejecting an &#8220;unacceptable&#8221; counterproposal from Tehran to end the war. <\/p>\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/11\/iran-war-trump-negotiation-hormuz-nuclear-talks.html\">latest counteroffer<\/a>, Iran has insisted on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iranintl.com\/en\/202605105180\" target=\"_blank\">war reparations, full sovereignty<\/a> over the Strait of Hormuz, the release of frozen Iranian assets and lifted sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>With energy prices remaining elevated, even more attention will be given to inflation data to assess the impact of the Iran war on the U.S. economy.<\/p>\n<p>In April, the consumer price index rose 0.6%, putting the annual inflation rate at 3.8%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While monthly move for headline inflation was in line with expectations, economists polled by Dow Jones were calling for a gain of 3.7% from a year earlier. That annual inflation rate was the highest since May 2023.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It isn&#8217;t like it&#8217;s an avalanche, but it&#8217;s a steady move upward,&#8221; Thomas Martin, senior portfolio manager at Globalt Investments, said to CNBC, adding that inflation is just &#8220;going to keep on building&#8221; the longer the conflict in the Middle East continues amid a lack of progress in negotiations between the U.S. and Iran.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As these gas prices and other prices are higher, it&#8217;s going to crimp more and more people, so the setup is for there to be continued struggles for the consumer,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"LiveStory-SpecialReport-QuoteInBody-11\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/MU\/\">Micron Technology<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\" \/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> \u2014 which led the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq Composite to fresh record highs in the previous session \u2014 reversed course from its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/11\/micron-shares-are-rising-again-despite-weak-overall-market-why-memory-chip-rally-seems-unstoppable.html\">recent gains<\/a>, falling more than 5%. The stock soared more than 37% last week and jumped more than 6% on Monday amid a memory chip rally.
