{"id":30841,"date":"2026-05-14T16:57:37","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T16:57:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/?p=30841"},"modified":"2026-05-14T16:57:39","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T16:57:39","slug":"exclusive-acting-ag-todd-blanche-was-told-last-year-to-recuse-from-justice-department-matters-involving-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/?p=30841","title":{"rendered":"Exclusive: Acting AG Todd Blanche was told last year to recuse from Justice Department matters involving Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-editable=\"content\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g0qqi00113b6rmgi4kw8a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It was less than two weeks after Todd Blanche took on his role of deputy attorney general in March 2025 when the Justice Department\u2019s top ethics lawyer delivered some straightforward yet inconvenient news: His recusal from legal cases that involved President Donald Trump in his personal capacity was necessary.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil00133b6r852lmjgy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The official conducting the briefing, Joseph Tirrell, handed Blanche and his then-top deputy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/27\/politics\/justice-department-official-second-whistleblower\">Emil Bove<\/a>, who was also in the conference room, a printed PowerPoint presentation on ethics, according to a former senior Justice ethics official who described the meeting to CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil00143b6r7cayanq9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The meeting, which hasn\u2019t previously been reported, is the first time Blanche was formally informed he would need to recuse himself from cases involving Trump. Around the same time, the department\u2019s top career lawyer advised that Bove potentially had a conflict of interest by being involved in firings of DOJ lawyers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4isr4800173b6rqn3os76h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Recusal, however, is a word that comes with treacherous consequences in the Trump era \u2014 including in the case of former Attorney General Jeff Sessions who Trump tormented after he recused himself from overseeing what eventually became the Mueller investigation. Blanche\u2019s choice is either to oversee investigations the president cares deeply about but risk damaging their viability in court or to recuse himself and risk incurring the president\u2019s wrath.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4ic9zw000j3b6rdcmvkm09@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now serving as acting attorney general, Blanche finds himself in an ethical quandary. His previous role representing Trump in criminal prosecutions brought by the Justice Department means that he is switching sides, overseeing the department\u2019s investigation of the former government officials whom Trump claims unfairly used the criminal justice system to target him.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4icp03000l3b6refxinwh4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That includes some who were connected to the prosecutions of Trump for mishandling classified records in Florida after his first term, and allegedly conspiring to overturn his loss in the 2020 presidential election. Blanche was Trump\u2019s primary defense lawyer in both federal court cases, which were dismissed prior to being fully resolved in court.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil00163b6rfcsj8g4f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Blanche signed the department\u2019s ethics pledge laid out to him by Tirrell, according to the former ethics official who spoke to CNN and a document submitted to the Office of Government Ethics. That pledge included requirements for Blanche to not participate for at least a year in any of the department\u2019s matters involving past clients of the Blanche Law Group, the small private law firm Blanche used to represent Trump in the criminal cases. The department\u2019s regulations also prohibit his participation \u201cin any criminal investigation or prosecution if he has a personal or political relationship\u201d with anyone who was involved in or has an interest in that investigation or prosecution.\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/cmp4hrh1200013b6rnf0ov7ua@published\" class=\"image_large-elevate vossi-image_large-elevate  image_large__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image_large\" data-name=\"2017-05-23T000000Z_1663223941_RC1462F29EC0_RTRMADP_3_USA-TRUMP-RUSSIA-BRENNAN.JPG\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-re data-breakpoints=\"{\" data-original-ratio=\"0.661875\" data-original-height=\"1059\" data-original-width=\"1600\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/2017-05-23t000000z-1663223941-rc1462f29ec0-rtrmadp-3-usa-trump-russia-brennan.JPG?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<div class=\"image_large__container \" data-image-variation=\"image_large\" data-breakpoints=\"{\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4ieudt000p3b6rhyy6h8db@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A Justice Department spokeswoman said Wednesday that Blanche is complying with ethical obligations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp5exk6h00033b6rr7u958kq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHe is recused from many cases before DOJ. In any cases that are still ongoing where he previously represented someone, he is recused,\u201d the spokeswoman said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp5exk6h00043b6rerrgrsg5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The department didn\u2019t specify which cases Blanche is recused from, but this was the first time they\u2019ve publicly acknowledged that he has recused from some investigations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp5n3wgi00093b6rrxjrkajz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After publication, the Justice Department sent CNN an additional statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp5n47pu000b3b6r0dvj60tf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTo the extent DOJ is investigating something related to the President for which Todd was previously representing him, then hypothetically yes, he would recuse,\u201d a spokeswoman for the Justice Department said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp5n4pha000d3b6r2stu1mma@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That remains \u201ca hypothetical,\u201d the spokeswoman added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp5h32as00033b6rxti8sq7z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The potential conflict is more acute now that Blanche has installed Joe diGenova, a former US attorney for DC, to reinvigorate an investigation into what diGenova has outlined as a broad conspiracy against Trump spanning from the 2017 Russian election interference probe to the aborted Special Counsel Jack Smith prosecutions that ended in 2024.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp5exizn00013b6rr0ykuuav@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            DiGenova is based in Fort Pierce, Florida, a federal court with few major criminal cases aside from Trump\u2019s. Among those targeted for possible prosecution is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/08\/politics\/inside-justice-department-shakeup-john-brennan-investigation\"> John Brennan, the former CIA director<\/a> \u2014 a top priority for Trump in his efforts to prosecute his political foes. Brennan denies wrongdoing. Last week, a spokesperson told CNN Blanche had not recused himself from the investigation into Brennan, which the department has repeatedly declined to comment on.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil00183b6r5ehyvwlx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Inside the Justice Department, Blanche has delegated oversight of the so-called conspiracy investigation to top aides, people briefed on the matter said. He has not participated in meetings on the probe in recent months, according to people briefed on the matter.\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/cmp4hu242000a3b6r0zqo0tuu@published\" class=\"image_large-elevate vossi-image_large-elevate  image_large__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image_large\" data-name=\"2026-04-07T170647Z_1632762567_RC2HKKAPZ2OL_RTRMADP_3_USA-JUSTICE-BLANCHE.jpg\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-re data-breakpoints=\"{\" data-original-ratio=\"0.6595218466611706\" data-original-height=\"1600\" data-original-width=\"2426\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/2026-04-07t170647z-1632762567-rc2hkkapz2ol-rtrmadp-3-usa-justice-blanche.jpg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<div class=\"image_large__container \" data-image-variation=\"image_large\" data-breakpoints=\"{\">\n       <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2026-04-07t170647z-1632762567-rc2hkkapz2ol-rtrmadp-3-usa-justice-blanche.jpg\" alt=\"Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche speaks during a press conference at the Justice Department in Washington, DC, on April 7.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2426\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4iuaua001b3b6rhr26d193@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In early 2025, a top career lawyer at the department and an ethics expert, wrote a memo to then-Attorney General Pam Bondi raising concerns that Bove was overseeing the effort to purge Justice Department employees who were involved in Trump-related prosecutions, two people briefed on the matter told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp5jxj0500003b6rydm1i0xz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A spokesperson for Bove didn\u2019t immediately return a request for comment Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil001l3b6r6pve5ck3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The memo, copied to the department\u2019s Office of Professional Responsibility and Inspector General, noted that Bove had worked on investigations of January 6 Capitol riot defendants when he was a prosecutor in New York\u2019s southern district. And so he shouldn\u2019t be involved in the department\u2019s so-called anti-weaponization plans, the memo said, according to one of the people familiar with the matter. The memo\u2019s author was pushed out soon after it was delivered last year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil001m3b6r4reuog7j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite the advice, Bove continued to oversee the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/14\/politics\/justice-department-weaponization-face-act-report\">Weaponization Working Group<\/a> that Bondi set up upon taking office in an effort to undo Biden-era Justice Department efforts Trump deems unfair \u2013 including by rewriting the January 6 rioter prosecutions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil001n3b6rbjk2gnon@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bove left the department to become an appeals court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/29\/politics\/emil-bove-trump-attorney-confirmed-federal-appellate-judge\">judge<\/a> last year.\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/cmp4hrmga00033b6rkfr2zrda@published\" class=\"image-elevate vossi-image_elevate  image__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-name=\"GettyImages-2212809438.jpg\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-re data-breakpoints=\"{\" data-original-ratio=\"0.6666281755196305\" data-original-height=\"5773\" data-original-width=\"8660\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-2212809438.jpg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"image__container \" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-breakpoints=\"{\">\n       <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/gettyimages-2212809438.jpg\" alt=\"A sign marks the location of the US Department of Justice (DOJ) headquarters building on April 30, 2025, in Washington, DC.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" height=\"5773\" width=\"8660\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil001q3b6r3m9m9u7l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s not known whether Blanche has asked for internal department guidance since his briefing with Tirrell, even though he said during his Senate confirmation hearing last year that he would follow the legal ethics guidance the department\u2019s staff gave to him.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil001r3b6rojs2j6fe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt was typical in past administrations for senior officials to solicit advice,\u201d especially when conflicts of interest were a close call, Benjamin Grimes, the former deputy director of DOJ\u2019s Professional Responsibility Advisory Office, said recently.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil001s3b6rbaazk3ry@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The conflicts of interest aren\u2019t uncommon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil001t3b6r9yfrjlev@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During the Biden administration, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco recused herself from investigations of President Joe Biden\u2019s alleged mishandling of classified documents, which didn\u2019t result in charges, and an investigation of Hunter Biden. Monaco had served in the Biden transition team and during the Obama administration worked closely with the vice president. An internal memo recorded her recusal but wasn\u2019t made public.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil001u3b6rs8t5hetk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During the George W. Bush administration, Attorney General John Ashcroft recused himself from the investigation into the leak of former CIA operative Valerie Plame\u2019s identity. He cited his close political relationship with President Bush and other top administration officials who would be potential witnesses in the probe.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil001v3b6rbub64fuo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the Justice Department during the second Trump term has broken with many past institutional norms, including the traditional separation between the White House and the department.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil001w3b6r47fm98hz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Grimes has concerns that Trump, Blanche\u2019s former private client, would be his only superior who could evaluate and decide whether a conflict of interest between Trump personally and the Justice Department can be overcome.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4j2e1h001l3b6r9houm5nf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s a conflict that is insurmountable,\u201d Grimes, now a Columbia Law School professor, said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil001x3b6rfh2df81c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s also a problem, Grimes said, if Trump were to want information out of the Justice Department that would benefit him personally.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil001z3b6repzfmgkq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since that meeting last spring, the Trump administration has gutted both the department\u2019s career ethics staff and its office of professional responsibility, and not replaced well-respected advisers for Justice Department headquarters who had over the years advised on some of the thorniest questions for leaders.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil00203b6rrkaunr16@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tirrell, the ethics official who had briefed Blanche on recusal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/14\/politics\/justice-department-ethics-official-fired\">was fired in July<\/a>. In that interview, Blanche asked Maxwell about her interactions with Trump many years before he became president, and she said Trump had done no wrong.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil00223b6r8snfi909@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ethics challenges continue to arise for Blanche and others in the administration, especially as their press conferences often highlight how federal law enforcement is carrying out Trump\u2019s wishes, and even retribution.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4j7ya3001s3b6rsk47rhfs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In his first press conference as acting attorney general, Blanche notably remarked, \u201cI love you, sir,\u201d to Trump.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil00243b6rk2fzkt7w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The possible consequences for Blanche, if he doesn\u2019t recuse from investigations involving Trump personally, may be thin.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil00253b6rkk1fay1z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If criminal charges were to arise in the future related to the Trump cases or in matters where Trump could have a personal interest, defense attorneys could challenge those cases in trial-level courts arguing the prosecutions weren\u2019t handled appropriately if Blanche played a decision-making role, some legal experts have told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil00263b6regy0h4n1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But largely, the backstop falls on lawmakers, who can demand answers from Blanche now that he leads the department.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp4g1iil00273b6rthy0v16k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cCongress needs to take action if either Congress or the public find this to be untenable.
