Investors were tracking the second day of high-stakes talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.<\/p>\n<p>The small-cap Kosdaq was down 2.61%. Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.N225\/\">Nikkei 225<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\" \/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> declined 1.1% and the Topix lost 0.13%.  In Australia, the\u00a0<span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.AXJO\/\">S&amp;P\/ASX 200<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\" \/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> was little changed.<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong&#8217;s\u00a0<span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.HSI\/\">Hang Seng index<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\" \/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0slid 0.89% while the CSI 300 remained flat. India&#8217;s Nifty 50 was up 0.2%.<\/p>\n<p>The Kospi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/06\/asia-markets-today-kospi-hang-seng-asx-trump-iran-deal-.html\">topped 7,000<\/a> for the first time on May 5, after index heavyweight Samsung Electronics reached a record high, crossing $1 trillion in market capitalization.<\/p>\n<p>The record-breaking streak comes amid\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/12\/tsmc-samsung-sk-hynixs-south-korea-taiwan-stocks-ai-chipmakers-concentration-risk.html\">concerns of concentration risks<\/a>, particularly in artificial intelligence stocks. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix together made up a record 42.2% of the Kospi in May, according to Manulife Investment Management.<\/p>\n<p>The earlier gains in South Korea&#8217;s market reflected investor optimism that the Trump-Xi talks could ease tensions around trade and technology exports, particularly for chipmakers and AI-related stocks.<\/p>\n<p>Shares of Samsung Electronics fell by more than 5% after its labor union said it would proceed with its planned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/13\/samsung-electronics-pares-66-billion-rout-as-seoul-moves-to-calm-strike-fears-involving-41000-workers.html\">18-day strike<\/a> from May 21 involving more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xn--5h5bv6v.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">45,00 workers<\/a>, even though the company has proposed resuming wage talks without preconditions.<\/p>\n<p>The union said it was willing to return to negotiations after June 7.<\/p>\n<p>Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for the closely watched summit, joined by a delegation of American business leaders, including <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-8\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/TSLA\/\">Tesla<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\" \/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> CEO Elon Musk and <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/NVDA\/\">Nvidia<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\" \/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> chief Jensen Huang.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">Xi warned Trump on Thursday that Washington and Beijing could face &#8220;clashes and even conflicts&#8221; if the sensitive issue of Taiwan independence is mishandled.<\/p>\n<p>Failure to handle the matter &#8220;properly&#8221; could place &#8220;the entire relationship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mfa.gov.cn\/eng\/xw\/zyxw\/202605\/t20260514_11910330.html\" target=\"_blank\">in great jeopardy<\/a>,&#8221;
