{"id":31043,"date":"2026-05-16T10:40:24","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T10:40:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/?p=31043"},"modified":"2026-05-16T10:40:29","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T10:40:29","slug":"ahead-of-world-cup-mamdani-unveils-plan-to-speed-up-buses-from-laguardia-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/?p=31043","title":{"rendered":"Ahead of World Cup, Mamdani Unveils Plan to Speed Up Buses From LaGuardia Airport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Another painfully slow bus is about to run free like USA soccer star Christian Pulisic sprinting up the pitch.<\/p>\n<p>The city will build a bus lane before next month\u2019s World Cup to speed up rides between the subway and LaGuardia Airport in Queens, Mayor Mamdani announced on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The eastbound bus lane will run on Broadway from 69th Street to Roosevelt Avenue, serving the free Q70 airport shuttle, Mamdani and the Department of Transportation said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArriving in New York City should be fast, affordable and reliable all year round \u2014 not just during major events,\u201d the mayor said in a statement. \u201cThis new bus lane will help welcome visitors from around the world this summer while delivering faster commutes every day for the thousands of-working class New Yorkers who rely on the Q70.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DOT\u2019s redesign will slap a center-running bus lane on Broadway, where the Q70 exits the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway towards the 74 Street-Broadway\/Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue subway hub.<\/p>\n<p>That small stretch of new bus lane could have big impacts: Serving 9,000 daily riders, the Q70 moves just 2.7 miles per hour during rush hour in the project area \u2014 slower than walking.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Q70 currently travels less than 3 mph in regular traffic on Broadway in Queens. <span class=\"image-credit\"> Photo: NYC DOT<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Wednesday\u2019s announcement is the second transportation initiative Mamdani\u2019s pegged to the upcoming World Cup so far. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2026\/03\/27\/mamdani-will-upgrade-brooklyn-bridge-manhattan-side-entrance-by-june\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Earlier this year<\/a>, Hizzoner announced plans to build a cyclist-only entrance to Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge to eliminate bike-pedestrian conflicts at the base of the span.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor\u2019s noble attempt to roll out the welcome mat for the Games may not wind up greeting as many visitors as World Cup boosters have promised. On Tuesday, the news outlet The City <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/2026\/05\/12\/world-cup-nyc-empty-hotel-rooms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> that 75 percent of New York City hotel rooms remain available for the six-week period when matches will be held at New Jersey\u2019s MetLife Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>For those who do head to the game, Gov. Hochul on Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7272680\/2026\/05\/12\/world-cup-bus-prices-new-york-new-jersey\/\">announced<\/a> that the state had intervened with $6 million to lower the cost of bus rides to the World Cup games from $80 to $20, and that the New York\/New Jersey host committee increased the available capacity of bus seats by hiring a yellow school bus company to provide rides.<\/p>\n<p>Across the river, Hochul\u2019s counterpart, Gov.
