Nakashima received a first-round bye, while Shang battled past Zizou Bergs in three sets.

Nakashima’s season has been a mix of promise and frustration. The American, who claimed his lone singles title in San Diego back in 2022, has yet to add another. He did capture a doubles crown in Delray Beach with Miomir Kecmanovic, but his singles results have been steady rather than spectacular. Semifinal runs in Mexico and Houston highlighted his season, while quarterfinal runs in Delray, Bordeaux, Stuttgart, London, and Washington helped him climb to a career-high No. 29 in June. Still, early exits have been all too common, with no progress beyond the round of 16 elsewhere. Statistically, he’s produced 418 aces this year, winning 74% of first-serve points, 28% on first-serve returns, and converting 36% of his 310 break points.

Shang, meanwhile, returns to Chengdu as the defending champion and Chinese No. 2. His breakthrough win here in 2024 made him just the second Chinese man to lift an ATP trophy in the Open Era. That triumph propelled him to No. 49, the first player born in 2005 or later to crack the Top 50. But injuries have slowed his rise. After a semifinal in Hong Kong to open 2025, he underwent right foot surgery in March and only returned in Toronto. Since then, he has yet to go past the first round of any event. His season stats are 38 aces, 73% first-serve points won, 26% return success, and a 34% break point conversion rate.

China’s Juncheng Shang 🇨🇳 advance to the Round of 16 at the ATP 250 Chengdu Open, edging past Belgium’s Zizou Bergs 🇧🇪6-1, 5-7, 6-4 in the opening round. pic.twitter.com/48RV4j6sZd

— Asian Tennis Federation (@asian_tennis) September 17, 2025

Brandon Nakashima vs. Juncheng Shang Head-to-Head Record

Brandon Nakashima and Juncheng Shang do not have a head-to-head yet.

Brandon Nakashima vs. Juncheng Shang Comparison

Brandon Nakashima

Category

Juncheng Shang

33

Current Ranking

138

121-102

Career W-L

32-37

26-22

YTD W-L

3-5

1

Career Titles

1

0

Grand Slams

0

0

YTD Titles

0

Brandon Nakashima vs. Juncheng Shang Prediction

Nakashima’s steady serve and quarterfinal consistency give him the edge, yet Shang’s return to the site of his career-defining triumph makes this clash intriguing.
