Jinkx Monsoon Sold Out Her Entire Oh, Mary!<\/em> Run, And More From Last Week’s Broadway Grosses<\/span><\/p>\n

The two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race<\/em> winner’s final week in Cole Escola’s hit comedy saw the highest box office in months.<\/p>\n

\n We may have to permanently replace “two-time\u00a0Drag Race<\/em> winner” with “bonafide Broadway star” as the preeminent descriptor for Jinkx Monsoon<\/a> in our ongoing coverage. The drag superstar has continued to prove herself a reliable box office booster, first with two stints as Matron “Mama” Morton in\u00a0Chicago<\/a><\/em>, an originating role in\u00a0Pirates!<\/em>, and, now,\u00a0Oh, Mary!<\/a><\/em>. Monsoon finished a limited run in Cole Escola<\/a>‘s hit comedy September 28 at the Lyceum Theatre, and we now know that entire stint was sold out. And further more, by the final week, Monsoon had ballooned the average ticket price to $185 and brought in the production’s highest gross since Tony-winning original star and playwright Escola played their final performance in June.<\/p>\n

Monsoon’s time with the show has only solidified the wacky play as one of Broadway’s most solid recent hits. Tony-winning\u00a030 Rock<\/em> star Jane Krakowski<\/a> is already waiting in the wings to join the cast later next month, which likely tells us that\u00a0Oh, Mary!<\/em>‘s wild success story is far from over. One needs more and more pearls to clutch as we await news of what further icons will don Mary Todd’s bratty curls before the play takes its final bow (if it ever does).<\/p>\n

Oh, Mary!<\/em>‘s continued success came as Broadway’s fortunes cooled somewhat last week, which is not a huge surprise considering it was our first week since Broadway Week’s BOGO ticket offer ended. Rosh Hashanah falling on the beginning of the week couldn’t have helped either.<\/p>\n

But even with cumulative grosses falling by 4.4% compared to the week prior, there’s lots to celebrate.\u00a0Art<\/a><\/em> and\u00a0Waiting for Godot<\/a><\/em> are continuing to show that star-driven play revivals are where it’s at on Broadway at the moment, both landing in the top five yet again, each bringing in more than $1.6 million. Both also saw average ticket prices in excess of $200, so be glad that theatregoers are willing to pay to see their favorite screen stars live!<\/p>\n

And speaking of expensive tickets, that top honor continues to go to\u00a0Hamilton<\/a><\/em>, where the return of Tony-winning original star Leslie Odom, Jr. has sent ticket prices into the stratosphere. The Lin-Manuel Miranda musical played to 10,751 people last week, paying on average $351 for the honor. That is keeping the show at the absolute top of the charts, bringing in just shy of $4 million.<\/p>\n

Beyond Hamilton<\/em>,\u00a0Art<\/em>, and Waiting for Godot<\/em>, the rest of the top five was filled out by usual suspects\u00a0Wicked<\/a><\/em> and\u00a0Mamma Mia!<\/a><\/em>, which means three of those five top slots were shows that have opened in this current season\u2014always worth celebrating.\u00a0Ragtime<\/a><\/em> also kicked off its run with a partial three-preview week that sold out completely at a healthy average ticket price of $143, making that revival one to watch in the weeks ahead, too.<\/p>\n

All together, Broadway’s 28 currently running shows brought in $30.78 million, which puts the season so far almost 9% ahead of the same period from last season. Remembering that last season was the highest-grossing in history, that’s music to our ears.
