For MSNBC\u2019s Jacob Soboroff and Katy Tur, the upcoming MSNBCLIVE \u201825<\/em><\/a> event in New York isn\u2019t just a chance to connect face-to-face with some of the network\u2019s biggest fans, it\u2019s a chance to kick back with each other–longtime colleagues but lifelong friends.<\/p>\n \u201cKaty and I have been friends since we were teenagers,\u201d Soboroff told me. \u201cWe grew up in Los Angeles together, and to be able to work together for the last 10 years has really been very, truly, honestly, a special experience.\u201d <\/p>\n Soboroff, an MSNBC senior national and political correspondent, and Tur, host of Katy Tur Reports<\/em>, will host a live conversation focused on immigration and identity, issues that they have covered deeply and that have become defining issues of the second Trump presidency.<\/p>\n MSNBC<\/small><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n \u201cWhat you\u2019re going to get out of Jacob and I is likely a conversation that centers a lot around immigration,\u201d Tur told me, \u201cand what we\u2019ve reported on and witnessed\u2014not just from this administration, but the last one as well.\u201d<\/p>\n MSNBCLIVE \u201925<\/em> is the network\u2019s second large-scale event, is designed to be more than a fan fest\u2014it\u2019s a space for dialogue, connection, and a key part of MSNBC\u2019s growing events business, aimed at expanding beyond its roots in cable television and deepening engagement with its base of superfans. <\/p>\n \u201cI think people want a connection,\u201d Tur said. \u201cWe spend so much of our life on screens. They want to feel a human connection. MSNBC\u2019s events business is a key part of what MS NOW will become, including a premium audio subscription business with 18 original podcasts, and a growing presence on YouTube and TikTok.<\/p>\n In recent months, MSNBC has been beefing up its news staff<\/a>–on and off camera, as it becomes an independent news operation for the first time in its 30-year history. Soboroff, who first joined MSNBC in 2015, returned as part of that massive wave of talent, along with familiar names like Eugene Daniels from Politico<\/a> and Carol Leonnig from The Washington Post. <\/em>The network has hired more than three dozen journalists from CNN, Bloomberg, Politico, ABC, NBC and PBS, and has recruited for another 50 roles across the organization, including newsgathering, digital, audio and specials.<\/p>\n Forbes<\/span>MSNBC\u2019s Ali Vitali Adds Capitol Hill Role As Network Makes Hires From CNN, Peacock<\/span>By Mark Joyella<\/span><\/small><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n For Soboroff, his return means a first time at MSNBCLIVE, which he missed in 2024. \u201cMy FOMO from missing it last year is slowly going away as we approach October 11,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n “It\u2019s the most engaged audience I\u2019ve ever been in front of professionally,\u201d Soboroff said of MSNBC\u2019s superfans. \u201cThis event is going to bring them into that energy themselves,\u201d he said. \u201cYou become less of a passive viewer and more of an engaged and active participant.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re not going to give you a Ron Burgundy version of Katy Tur or me,\u201d Soboroff joked. \u201cYou\u2019re going to get us\u2014unfiltered and honest.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re excited to meet people, shake their hands, and talk to them in person,\u201d Tur said. \u201cTake some pictures and have a really interesting, vibrant discussion about the world we\u2019re living in today.\u201d<\/p>\n Forbes<\/span>MSNBC To Rebrand As \u2018MS NOW\u2019<\/span>By Mark Joyella<\/span><\/small><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n It\u2019s that kind of unfiltered honesty viewers have come to expect from both Soboroff and Tur, whose coverage of the Pacific Palisades wildfires<\/a> in Los Angeles this year included her deeply personal reflections on seeing her childhood home \u201cburned to the ground alongside the homes of almost every else I grew up with in Pacific Palisades.\u201d<\/p>\n In January, Tur described covering the fires while also receiving constant notifications on her phone, each message reporting another part of her life erased by the flames. \u201cMy godforsaken phone\u2026never stops buzzing,\u201d Tur said. \u2018This is bad\u2019 the messages read. \u2018Someone saw my street burning on ABC7,\u2019 says another. \u2018Our home is gone.\u2019 \u2018My parents\u2019 home, too\u2019.\u2019 \u2018There\u2019s nothing left.\u2019 \u2018Your elementary school is gone.\u2019 \u2018So is your home.\u2019 My home.”<\/em><\/p>\n When Soboroff and Tur join MSNBC hosts like Rachel Maddow, Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, and Jen Psaki at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York, they aim to talk about immigration and identity the way they talk about it off camera. \u201cThe best conversations are the ones you have with your closest friends,\u201d Tur said. \u201cWe\u2019re incredibly lucky to bring that to MSNBC viewers\u2014not just on television, but through this event in person.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou want to be able to have hard conversations,\u201d Tur told me. \u201cIf you have one side being chilled or pressured or intimidated, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s good for anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n Soboroff added that while they can\u2019t predict the future any better than viewers can, they can share what they\u2019ve learned on the ground reporting and talking to people personally impacted by Donald Trump\u2019s policies. \u201cWe\u2019re not oracles,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I can tell you what I\u2019ve seen, what I\u2019ve touched and felt and smelled.
