\n<\/p>\n
For nearly 16 years, Danielle Jonas\u00a0has stood beside her husband, Kevin Jonas\u2014yes, that<\/em> Kevin Jonas, one-third of the timeless Jonas Brothers.\n<\/p>\n From the outside, her world looks like a highlight reel: red carpets, front row at concerts, glittering award shows, and a beautiful family. But behind the glam, Danielle was quietly fighting a health battle that rattled her confidence and forced her to rethink how she cares for herself\u2014and her family.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n But through it all, Danielle and Kevin kept one thing in focus: their two daughters, Alena, 11, and Valentina, 8.\n<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Even though Kevin grew up surrounded by brothers, he, along with bandmates Nick and Joe, have all become proud girl dads<\/a>. They have five daughters between them! Danielle says the cousins are incredibly close, spending much of the summer together while the Jonas Brothers were on tour. And Danielle is certain Kevin was born to raise girls.\n<\/p>\n \u201cKevin never really mentioned wanting boys, so when we had two girls, he was beside himself. He always gives them their way, but the biggest thing is just how much he loves them,\u201d she says. \u201cHe flies home every chance he can. Even if it\u2019s a day off and a six-hour flight, he\u2019ll come home for a couple of hours and then fly back. I give him so much credit for that.\u201d\n<\/p>\n Alena and Valentina are already picking up dad-approved hobbies, too.\n<\/p>\n \u201cMy oldest loves golf, so she shares that with Kevin. And my youngest? She\u2019s just started playing the guitar,\u201d Danielle shares. \u201cWatching them in the family room\u2014Kevin with his guitar, and Valentina with her small, little guitar\u2014I feel like that just makes me die inside. It’s so cute!\u201d\n<\/p>\n <\/p>\n With the girls in school and the Jonas Brothers on tour this fall, carving out family time and attending shows isn\u2019t easy.\n<\/p>\n \u201cWe like the girls to be in school so they have some normalcy,\u201d Danielle explains. \u201cThe school is really accommodating when we do take them out\u2014but we don\u2019t do it often. They\u2019re their own people, with their friends, their routines. We really want them to choose their own paths, and being in school helps with that. It would be so much harder if they were on tour all the time.\u201d\n<\/p>\n Life in a family with a touring musician isn\u2019t always easy, but Danielle is proud of how they make it work. When she\u2019s home solo with the girls, she treasures the bonding time. Even when Kevin is away, Danielle never feels disconnected from him. They\u2019ve learned how to make distance work ever since the very start of their relationship.\n<\/p>\n \u201cWe were long-distance when we first met, so our relationship was on the phone, and we talked so much. Kevin\u2019s brothers would call him out,\u201d Danielle laughs. \u201cSo when he’s away now, we still do talk a lot. We’re always telling each other what we’re up to, or we say goodnight. Before he gets on a flight, he calls me, and when he lands. His tours are a big stretch over a couple of months, but then he’s off for a while and we’re together.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n Of course, the girls are the Jonas Brothers and<\/em> Kevin\u2019s biggest fans. In August, during a Jonas Brothers tour stop in Boston, Kevin surprised fans by performing his solo song, “Changing,” for the very first time.\n<\/p>\n While Alena and Valentina couldn\u2019t be there in person, Danielle says they were \u201cflipping out\u201d watching over FaceTime. Danielle, however, got the full front-row experience, describing the moment as “overwhelming.”\n<\/p>\n \u201cI knew he was going to do it, and I was saying to myself, \u2018I’m not going to cry. I’m not going to cry.\u2019 But once I saw him up there by himself, I was like, \u2018Oh my gosh,\u2019\u201d Danielle shares. \u201cI was nervous for him, but so excited and knew that he was so ready for it. We talked about it a bunch before he even did it. He did so good. His voice was unreal. I was so proud of him.\u201d\n<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Danielle\u2019s ordeal began when she noticed her hair was falling out. Doctors had no answers or a diagnosis.\n<\/p>\n \u201cThey tried to tell me it was anxiety. Finally, I had a biopsy that showed I actually had Lyme disease,\u201d she tells Parents<\/em>. \u201cI also had eczema<\/a> on my scalp, which was likely from the inflammation [caused by Lyme disease]. The hair loss was very traumatic. I got to a point where I wanted to wear a wig.\u201d\n<\/p>\n Instead of a wig, Danielle relied on extensions. Except they irritated her eczema even more because of the way they pulled at her scalp.\n<\/p>\n \u201cI had to go out and do things with Kevin. I just wanted to feel like myself,\u201d she says.\n<\/p>\n That\u2019s when Danielle went into full detective mode, scrutinizing everything that touched her skin\u2014lotions, serums, hair products, even the family\u2019s laundry detergent<\/a>. As it turned out, switching their detergent to all\u00ae free clear<\/a> made a remarkable difference. Danielle has since partnered with the brand because she trusted it, especially since all their products have received a stamp of acceptance from the National Eczema Association.\n<\/p>\n Luckily, Danielle has her Lyme disease under control. While she still experiences some symptoms, including eczema flare-ups, Danielle\u2019s relieved that it\u2019s more manageable.\n<\/p>\n <\/span> <\/p>\n If there\u2019s one silver lining, it\u2019s that Danielle\u2019s experience armed her with the empathy and know-how to help her daughters, who also deal with eczema. She doesn\u2019t want it to affect their self-esteem<\/a> or confidence.<\/p>\n \u201cThey saw everything I went through, so the main thing I tell them [when their eczema flares up] is \u2018this is going to pass,\u2019\u201d says Danielle.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n Like many tweens these days, both of Danielle’s daughters, especially Alena, are very into their skincare routines<\/a>. Danielle encourages them to use products with clean ingredients.\n<\/p>\n \u201cI had to reel Alena back in a little bit. Besides eczema, she\u2019s always had other skin issues, so keeping things clean for her is important,\u201d shares Danielle. \u201cStill, she gets mad because she wants to have fun with certain products. I just tell her, \u2018Well, do you want a flare-up or do you want it to get it under control? That helps her come back down.\u2019\u201d\n<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Danielle also noticed other changes with Alena now that she’s in sixth grade<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n \u201cIt’s just wild. She’s very into clothes and hair. We’re almost the same size, so she\u2019s always in my closet,\u201d she laughs.\n<\/p>\n In the Jonas (and Deleasa) households, sibling dynamics are kind of a big deal. Danielle grew up the classic middle child\u2014sandwiched between an older sister and two younger siblings. Kevin, of course, is the oldest of four brothers.\n<\/p>\n Valentina hasn’t quite caught up yet with her big sister’s newfound love of fashion\u2014yet. Danielle shares that her younger daughter\u2019s \u201cthing\u201d is the Disney character Stitch<\/a>.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n \u201cI feel like she \u2018identifies\u2019 as Stitch, but I love it,\u201d she says.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n Despite their differences, Danielle loves the relationship her daughters are building.\n<\/p>\n \u201cAlena has always tried to take care of her younger sister. She\u2019s very loving and has a huge heart,\u201d says Danielle. \u201cValentina wants to be more on her own. I try to teach her that she has to care about her sister, too.
