{"id":6813,"date":"2025-10-19T23:35:40","date_gmt":"2025-10-19T23:35:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/?p=6813"},"modified":"2025-10-19T23:35:41","modified_gmt":"2025-10-19T23:35:41","slug":"the-enormous-conflict-of-interest-at-centre-of-jared-kushners-gaza-ceasefire-deal-jared-kushner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/?p=6813","title":{"rendered":"The \u2018enormous conflict of interest\u2019 at centre of Jared Kushner\u2019s Gaza ceasefire deal | Jared Kushner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"83c0d208-10c1-4450-9773-9a7ac9569bb3\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.InteractiveAtomBlockElement\" class=\"element element-atom dcr-173mewl\">\n<figure class=\"interactive interactive-atom dcr-e6xisx\" data-atom-id=\"interactives\/2025\/04\/2025-weekend-essay-test\/essay-layout-v2\" data-atom-type=\"interactive-layout\" \/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">For a man with no formal role in the White House, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/jared-kushner\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Jared Kushner<\/a> last week literally took centre-stage as Donald Trump\u2019s emissary to the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As the administration took a victory lap for hammering out a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gaza\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Gaza<\/a> ceasefire last week, Kushner, Trump\u2019s son-in-law, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/oct\/13\/trump-did-everything-jubilant-israelis-heap-praise-on-us-president-as-hostages-return\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">stood in Tel Aviv\u2019s \u2018hostages square\u2019, addressing a feverish crowd<\/a> that had booed the mention of Israel\u2019s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and later broke into chants of: \u201cThank You Trump!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOctober 7 for me was a shattering day,\u201d said Kushner, who had shed his customary business suit for a simple black T-shirt. \u201cSince then, my heart has not been complete.\u201d He felt obligated, he said, \u201cto see the hostages come home, to see their families get the closure they deserve, and to end this nightmare. Also, to see the suffering end for the people in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gaza\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Gaza<\/a> who, for most of them, were experiencing this through no fault of their own, other than being born into a situation that was horrific.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"54726ba2-c827-4b31-bad1-e45be0bb54df\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"element element--inline element-inline dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Kushner speaks as Israelis gather at \u2018hostages square\u2019 in Tel Aviv to celebrate the ceasefire agreement in Gaza on 11 October.<\/span> Photograph: Anadolu\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It was a strong diplomatic sentiment for a man whose boss had threatened to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/mar\/05\/trump-administration-hamas-israel-gaza-ceasefire\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">unleash \u201chell\u201d in Gaza<\/a>. But the soft-spoken heir to his father\u2019s real estate empire has quietly become a key conduit for Trump\u2019s outreach to the Middle East, leveraging his Rolodex of leaders in the region and positioning himself to win a lucrative windfall if the goal of redeveloping Gaza ever comes to fruition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It has been a notable return to the political fold after Kushner and his wife, Ivanka Trump, effectively swore off politics after the January 6 riots at the US Capitol that followed Trump\u2019s loss in the 2020 elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Now, Kushner, who manages billions of dollars in investments including from Saudi Arabia and Qatar\u2019s sovereign wealth fund in his investment company Affinity Partners, sits at the nexus of power in Washington DC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOf course there\u2019s an enormous conflict of interest here,\u201d said Matt Duss, the executive vice-president at the Center for International Policy, who described the influence-peddling in the administration as open corruption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But, he added: \u201cPart of what\u2019s bizarre is that the Trump organisation is so deeply leveraged in the Middle East that the corruption could sustain the ceasefire. Because they all stand to make so much money there is an interest and an incentive to kind of stop the war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The administration has denied that there is a conflict of interest in Kushner\u2019s diplomatic work while continuing to run an investment fund managing billions of dollars from Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatari state funds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI think it\u2019s frankly despicable that you\u2019re trying to suggest that it\u2019s inappropriate for Jared Kushner, who is widely respected around the world and has great trust and relationships with these critical partners in these countries, to strike a 20-point comprehensive, detailed plan that no other administration would ever be able to achieve,\u201d White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told a reporter during a briefing earlier this month. \u201cJared is donating his energy and his time to our government, to the president of the United States, to secure world peace, and that is a very noble thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kushner, who was born into an Orthodox Jewish family in New Jersey, had no previous experience in diplomacy before he was proposed by his father, the New York real estate developer Charles Kushner, to join Trump\u2019s first administration. He was mocked after an early interview in Trump\u2019s first term when he said he had \u201cbeen studying this now for three years. I\u2019ve read 25 books on it, I\u2019ve spoken to every leader in the region, I\u2019ve spoken to everyone who\u2019s been involved in this\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Now, JD Vance and other backers of the administration have taken to reposting the remarks with a sense of vindication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">When Trump returned to the White House in January, Kushner and Ivanka stayed in their $24m Miami megamansion and did not take any formal role in the transition, keeping more distance between themselves and the administration than during Trump\u2019s first term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">For many, Kushner\u2019s central role in the negotiations was unknown until he and Tony Blair participated in a White House meeting in August to discuss planning for the postwar governance and redevelopment of Gaza.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"e7535a8f-04ae-418b-98aa-9370b681fa1d\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"element element--inline element-inline dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Tony Blair and Jared Kushner at a US-led workshop in Manama, Bahrain, on 26 June 2019.<\/span> Photograph: Anadolu\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI put Jared on it because he\u2019s a very smart person and he knows the region, knows the people, knows a lot of the players,\u201d said Trump last week shortly after the deal was announced. In an interview with the New York Times, Kushner explained it simply: he and Steve Witkoff, the president\u2019s Middle East envoy, were \u201cdeal guys\u201d, veterans of the New York real-estate scene who understood what made people tick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cA lot of the people who do this are history professors, because they have a lot of experience, or diplomats. It\u2019s just different being deal guys \u2013 just a different sport,\u201d Kushner said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">According to US officials, Kushner and Witkoff had been given virtually unlimited authority by Trump to get both sides to agree to a ceasefire: from a closed-door meeting between Trump and Arab leaders during the UN general assembly to stress test a 20-point Gaza proposal, to persuading Netanyahu to deliver an apology message to Qatar\u2019s prime minister after an Israeli airstrike in Doha last month, to an unprecedented meeting between White House officials and Hamas that led to the best chance to end the war in Gaza since it began in October 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOne of his strengths was that he was unofficial\u201d but still had direct access to Trump, said a former US diplomat of Kushner. \u201cHe could work in the background, and through his business interests, to bridge all of these sides and build enough credibility to help get the deal across the line.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"e7704cb4-dc59-42a7-a509-349ecb1b8199\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement\" class=\"element element--richLink element-richLink dcr-47fhrn\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Since Trump\u2019s first term, said diplomats and associates, Kushner had pushed a vision that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was a stumbling block preventing a vast rapprochement between Israel and Arab states, especially the Gulf states of Saudi Arabia and the UAE, that could transform the region economically.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">After Netanyahu\u2019s strike on Qatar earlier this month, Kushner and Witkoff were said to have sensed an opening, as Arab leaders grew worried that the attack could set a precedent for further strikes in the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In an interaction first reported by the Wall Street Journal and then confirmed by US officials, Kushner and Witkoff dictated the apology to the Qatari prime minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani that Netanyahu delivered by telephone shortly before he and Trump appeared together at a White House summit in late September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt was the sort of thing that mature people do,\u201d said a US official briefed on Witkoff and Kushner\u2019s efforts to negotiate a ceasefire. \u201cThat got us some leverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"e86c5a76-f804-40e6-a604-4f8eba6810e1\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"element element--inline element-inline dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Donald Trump and Jared Kushner at Ben Gurion international airport on 13 October amid the prisoner-hostage swap and ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.<\/span> Photograph: Evelyn Hockstein\/Reuters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Observers say Kushner\u2019s imprint on Middle East policy has been visible since the beginning of Trump\u2019s second administration. One signature proposal \u2013 that Gaza be redeveloped as a vast beachfront property \u2013 was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/mar\/19\/jared-kushner-gaza-waterfront-property-israel-negev\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">first voiced by Kushner at an event at Harvard in 2024<\/a>. Critics accused Trump of promoting ethnic cleansing after he said that Palestinians could be forcibly evicted from Gaza before the redevelopment \u2013 an idea that Kushner had also floated first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Aaron David Miller, a former diplomat and Middle East negotiator, and a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, recalled meeting Kushner during Trump\u2019s first term and described his unsentimental approach to diplomacy in the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201c[Kushner] said: \u2018Don\u2019t talk to me about history,\u2019\u201d recalled Miller. \u201cI\u2019m not interested in history. We\u2019re doing things differently here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kushner\u2019s family had maintained close links with Netanyahu for decades, mainly through his father, Charles Kushner, who had been a major donor to pro-Israeli causes.
