Keri Russell<\/a> empathizes with her character in The Diplomat<\/em>, U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler<\/a>, whose looks are sometimes scrutinized by other characters.\n<\/p>\n During a\u00a0PEOPLE in 10<\/a>\u00a0interview about\u00a0season 3 of the Netflix political drama<\/a>, Russell shared her feelings about beauty standards while discussing her character.\n<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m totally empathetic,\u201d\u00a0says the 49-year-old actress, who has made countless headlines for her looks \u2014 and locks \u2014 since her breakout role in Felicity<\/em><\/a> in 1998. \u201cIt\u2019s such a weird thing being a woman. Everyone has an opinion about the way you look, the way you dress, the way your hair is.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s just the nature of our society. But I also find it really enjoyable, I mean, it\u2019s like a fun thing to play,\u201d Russell continues of portraying Kate in The Diplomat<\/em>. \u201cI like how cranky she is about it, and how she\u2019s always trying to fight people about it, and is rude about it. I love it. I find it delightful.\u201d\n<\/p>\n <\/span> For Russell, the beauty topics spill over into real life, too.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s something my girlfriends and I talk about all the time. Plastic surgery is having such a moment right now \u2014\u00a0men, women, 20-year-olds. I mean, it is around,\u201d she explains. \u201cWe\u2019re inundated with these movie stars. Even though they might be 50 or 60 years old, they look amazing.\u201d\n<\/p>\n Russell adds, \u201cI watch this show and I\u2019m like, I do not look like that, you know. I do. And I comb it,\u201d her character explains. \u201cIt\u2019s a style. That style is: not looking like you spend hours [doing your hair], because some people have more important things to do.
