Just wait"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-editable=\"content\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p>    <cite class=\"source__cite vossi-source__cite\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__location vossi-source__location\" data-editable=\"location\">New York<\/span><br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<br \/>\n    <\/cite><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh116amb00d227npd1mu2hm4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Monday\u2019s Amazon Web Services outage \u2014 and the global disruption it caused \u2014 underscored just how reliant the internet has become on a small number of core infrastructure providers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh11a7nm00063b6naqs4w0w3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The ramifications of such outages could only get worse if artificial intelligence becomes as central to work and daily life as tech giants suggest it will in the coming years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh11a7nm00073b6n9mxc564h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Monday\u2019s outage briefly blocked some people from scheduling doctor\u2019s appointments and accessing banking services. But what if an outage took down the AI tools that doctors were using to help diagnose patients, or that companies used to help facilitate financial transactions?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh11a7nm00083b6nlelrsfg1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It may be a hypothetical scenario today, but the tech industry is promising a rapid shift toward AI \u201cagents\u201d doing more work on behalf of humans in the near future \u2013 and that could make businesses, schools, hospitals and financial institutions even more reliant on cloud-based services. A global survey of nearly 1,500 firms <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/quantumblack\/our-insights\/the-state-of-ai\" target=\"_blank\">published by McKinsey &amp; Company<\/a> in May found that 78% of respondents already use AI in at least one business function, up 55% from a year earlier.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh11a7nm00093b6n9dmkoilf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf there\u2019s an outage and you rely on AI to make your decisions and you can\u2019t access it, that\u2019s going to have an effect on performance,\u201d said Tim DeStefano, associate research professor at Georgetown\u2019s McDonough School of Business.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh11a7nm000a3b6n1kgtcmmo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Monday\u2019s outage had such a widespread impact because many companies rely on cloud providers for the backend functions that support their businesses, such as virtual server space, storage or developer tools. Typically, this set up is more affordable, flexible and secure for those customers, except when AWS experiences an outage. Then it\u2019s effectively a single point of failure for a huge swath of the internet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh11a7nm000b3b6n9msip25b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To be fair, these services are remarkably sturdy considering the scale of their operations. But outages like Monday\u2019s raise questions about<strong> <\/strong>how crucial tech services could be made even more reliable.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh11a7nm000c3b6nc0sdddby@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            AWS serves millions of customers, from retailers and restaurants to financial services firms and government agencies; it holds around 37% of the cloud computing market, according to Gartner. Together with Microsoft and Google, the three companies service around 70% of the market.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh11a7nm000d3b6n0g91ddxb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And the consolidation of the internet\u2019s backbone is continuing in the age of AI. While there\u2019s some grappling between the big three, Amazon, Microsoft and Google remain by far the prominent cloud computing providers for AI applications, according to<strong> <\/strong>Emarketer senior analyst Jacob Bourne \u2014 and their futures depend at least in part on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/16\/tech\/oracle-larry-ellison-ai-computing\"> serving AI demand<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh11a7nm000e3b6ne74mhz37@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While websites and apps can still technically function using their companies\u2019 own less powerful on-premises servers, \u201ccloud computing represents a technological prerequisite for using AI,\u201d DeStefano said. That\u2019s because the computers needed to run AI tools are powerful and expensive, and on-site hardware isn\u2019t as easy to modify as business needs change. It just makes more sense to rent that computer space and pay for it only as needed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh11a7nm000f3b6njskyqmxq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And as AI becomes more widespread, data center outages could happen more frequently since AI models are so power-hungry, Bourne said. Major cloud providers, including Amazon, Microsoft and Google, are spending billions on data centers to address this growing need.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh11a7nm000g3b6n4to4nsp6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The risk of serious disruption from an outage rises considerably the more companies rely on AI agents to do critical tasks and automate the work of humans, a transition that\u2019s already in progress despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/21\/tech\/ai-replace-human-workers-tech-insiders-split\">disagreement about just how far it will go<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh11a7nm000h3b6npb8qwscd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tech companies are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/23\/tech\/google-study-90-percent-tech-jobs-ai\">relying on AI to do much of their coding;<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/15\/jpmorgan-chase-goldman-sachs-ai-hiring.html\" target=\"_blank\">big banks are hiring fewer workers as they lean more on AI;<\/a> even Amazon is looking at how AI-enabled robots could automate 75% of its warehouse operations, the New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/21\/technology\/inside-amazons-plans-to-replace-workers-with-robots.html\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> Tuesday, citing leaked internal documents. (Amazon says the documents paint a misleading picture of its plans.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh11a7nm000i3b6n41pp3b03@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is the dream, but if something goes wrong and you don\u2019t have that human intelligence that\u2019s up to speed,\u201d Bourne said, \u201cthen we\u2019re really offloading all of these critical tasks to AI and putting a lot of trust in the technology.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh11a7nm000j3b6n67sb96xl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But that threat isn\u2019t inevitable: The shift to AI presents an opportunity to build more resilient internet architecture. Smaller cloud computing competitors like Oracle and CoreWeave are gaining market share with AI-specific offerings. And companies are increasingly relying on multiple cloud providers to create a backstop if one goes down.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh11a7nm000k3b6nb9hpe3j5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Major large language model makers, including Meta and OpenAI, are also investing billions to build their own data centers, which could reduce the strain on shared systems. The tech industry is also pushing to make some AI models smaller and more power-efficient, so they can run locally on smartphones and laptops rather than relying on the cloud so much.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh11a7nm000l3b6ns5m1jwne@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And AI could help find and fix security flaws to prevent outages like Monday\u2019s \u2014 if companies invest in those capabilities as much as buzzy, popular tools like AI chatbots and video generation apps.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh11a7nm000m3b6nslf35m33@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere is a pathway to make AI serve us in the best possible ways,\u201d Bourne said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t necessarily seem like we\u2019re on that pathway, though.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/22\/tech\/aws-internet-outage-ai-risks\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New York \u00a0\u2014\u00a0 Monday\u2019s Amazon Web Services outage \u2014 and the global disruption it caused \u2014 underscored just how reliant the internet has become on a small number of core infrastructure providers.
