Nelly Furtado issued a major career update to her fans, sharing in a social media post that she plans \u201cto step away\u201d from performing for some time.<\/p>\n
The \u201cManeater\u201d singer shared the news on Instagram on Friday, where she looked back at her 25-year career with gratitude with a lengthy note.<\/p>\n
While Furtado noted that she \u201cfelt so actualized\u201d early on in her career, she decided it was time to take a step back from performing after almost three decades.<\/p>\n
\u201c25 years later, my music has reached a whole new generation of fans and I couldn\u2019t be happier about that,\u201d she wrote. \u201cTo have so many people rediscovering my music has been surreal and joyful. It\u2019s been so fun embracing this opportunity, getting out on stages again and seeing up close, the true lasting power of good music. It\u2019s made me really believe in magic.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/a><\/figure>\n She added: \u201cAll this aside, I have decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future and pursue some other creative and personal endeavors that I feel would better suit this next phase of my life. I have enjoyed my career immensely, and I still love writing music, as I have always seen it as a hobby I was lucky enough to make into a career. I\u2019ll identify as a songwriter forever.\u201d<\/p>\n Before concluding her note, Furtado thanked her fans, saying she had \u201cendless gratitude to anyone who has ever listened and vibrated with my music and attended any of my shows.\u201d<\/p>\n She also thanked those who helped her music dream become a reality, adding she hoped younger artists were able to experience the same \u201cfruitful\u201d collaborations.<\/p>\n Furtado\u2019s announcement notably came on the 25th anniversary of her first studio album,\u00a0titled \u201cWhoa, Nelly!\u201d The songwriter is one of the most successful Canadian artists, having\u00a0sold over 45 million records. She also won the Grammy award for Best Pop Collaboration for her 2007 song with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland, \u201cGive It to Me.\u201d<\/p>\n Her other hit songs include 2000\u2019s \u201cI\u2019m Like a Bird,\u201d 2001\u2019s \u201cTurn Off the Light,\u201d 2006\u2019s \u201cPromiscuous\u201d and the aforementioned \u201cManeater,\u201d also released in 2006.<\/p>\n Furtado released her last album, titled \u201c7,\u201d in September last year.
