An IBM spokesman confirmed the report to CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>In August, the two companies announced an agreement to <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ibm.com\/2025-08-26-ibm-and-amd-join-forces-to-build-the-future-of-computing\" target=\"_blank\">develop quantum computing capabilities<\/a> and integrate technologies. IBM said it plans to debut a &#8220;large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/10\/ibm-quantum-processor-starling-supercomputer.html\">by 2029<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>IBM called the new development a &#8220;milestone in our clear path&#8221; toward the 2029 projection.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Designing and implementing a way to do this at scale, and without requiring expensive GPU clusters, is a significant achievement to scaling useful quantum computers,&#8221; the company said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>AMD didn&#8217;t immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The technology utilizes quantum mechanics to address problems that traditional computers are unable to solve. Technology giants such as <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-6\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GOOGL\/\">Google<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\" \/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>, <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-7\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/MSFT\/\">Microsoft<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\" \/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-8\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AMZN\/\">Amazon<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\" \/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> are also racing to develop quantum computing.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Microsoft rolled out its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/02\/19\/microsoft-reveals-its-first-quantum-computing-chip-the-majorana-1.html\">first quantum computing chip<\/a>, while Google launched its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/12\/10\/google-claims-quantum-milestone-but-cant-solve-real-world-problems-.html\">breakthrough chip named WIllow<\/a>.
