On October 27, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins (District 5) received an\u00a0$800,000 appropriation from State Representative Alex Rizo<\/strong>\u00a0(District 112)\u00a0on behalf of the Florida House of Representatives\u00a0<\/strong>to support the\u00a0Citrus Grove School Children & Families Pedestrian Safety Initiative<\/strong>, a\u00a0critical infrastructure project designed to protect children and families walking to Citrus Grove Elementary and Middle School in Little Havana<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cEvery child deserves to walk to school without fear, and every parent deserves peace of mind knowing their neighborhood streets are safe,\u201d said Commissioner Eileen Higgins. \u201cThis investment is about protecting lives and strengthening our community. Thanks to Representative Alex Rizo\u2019s partnership and the support of our state and county teams, I\u2019m excited to see this roadway become a safer, more welcoming place for the children and families of Citrus Grove.\u201d<\/p>\n Located along\u00a0SW 22 Avenue between 3rd and 6th Street<\/strong>, this corridor has been identified as a high-risk area with frequent pedestrian crashes and fatalities. Planned\u00a0improvements include curb extensions, a new mid-block crossing with Rectangular Rapid-Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) between NW 5th and NW 6th Streets, concrete safety islands, and an upgrade of the existing span wire pedestrian signal at NW 22 Avenue between NW 4 Terrace and NW 5 Street to a mast arm<\/strong>. The project also includes\u00a0beautification enhancements<\/strong>. Together, these upgrades will make walking and biking safer for students and families traveling to and from school.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m proud to partner with Commissioner Eileen Higgins and Miami-Dade County to make our streets safer for the children and families of Citrus Grove,\u201d said State Representative Alex Rizo. \u201d When state and local leaders work together, we can deliver real results that strengthen our neighborhoods and improve the quality of life for our residents.\u201d<\/p>\n The total project cost is estimated at $3.2 million, with Miami-Dade County contributing $ 2.4 million toward its completion.
