\n Former President Barack Obama on Thursday celebrated Democrats\u2019 sweeping victory in Tuesday\u2019s election<\/a>, but stressed that there\u2019s more work for the party to do.\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cTuesday was nice, but we\u2019ve got a lot of work to do,\u201d Obama said during a live taping of the podcast \u201cPod Save America.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n Democrats won across the spectrum Tuesday with Zohran Mamdani elected mayor of New York City, while Abigail Spanberger<\/a> and Mikie Sherrill<\/a> won gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey, respectively. In California, a Democrat-backed ballot measure on redistricting<\/a> was also approved by voters.\n <\/p>\n \n Over the weekend, Obama campaigned with Spanberger and Sherrill<\/a>, and called Mamdani \u2014 whom he did not endorse \u2014 to offer to be a \u201csounding board,\u201d CNN previously reported.\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cIt was good to see progressives get off the mat. It was a good reminder that it turns out the American people are paying attention,\u201d Obama said Thursday, according to a rushed transcript provided by Crooked Media, which organized the event. \u201cThey don\u2019t want cruelty. They\u2019re not looking for people on the top trying to entrench themselves in power. They believe in community. They believe in treating people with decency and respect.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n The former president went on to say that this week\u2019s elections demonstrated that candidates \u201cwith integrity\u201d resonate with voters.\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cIt turns out that if, number one, you have candidates with integrity who believe in something and are in it for the right reasons, they can win,\u201d Obama said.\n <\/p>\n \n All three candidates ran on a platform of affordability \u2014 an issue that propelled President Donald Trump\u2019s return to the White House in the 2024 election. Trump on Wednesday urged Republicans to focus more on the economy<\/a> in their messaging.\n <\/p>\n \n Another takeaway from the election, according to Obama, is \u201cwhen young people are engaged and involved, then we win.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n According to preliminary CNN exit polls, nearly 80% of voters aged 18-29 backed Mamdani<\/a>. Similarly, 69% of the same age group voted for Sherrill<\/a> and 70% supported Spanberger<\/a>. In California<\/a>, 84% of voters 24 and under cast a ballot in favor of Democrats\u2019 redistricting measure, along with 76% of voters between the ages of 25 and 29.\n <\/p>\n \n Looking ahead to future elections, Obama said Democrats\u2019 \u201cjob is to say that we want everybody engaged.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cWe want to have a conversation about how to make sure that every person in this country is treated with dignity and respect, and there are ladders of opportunity, and that there, there\u2019s the possibility of community and that we\u2019re getting along,\u201d Obama said.\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cNot in some cliched, phonied way,\u201d Obama continued, \u201cBut in a genuine, deep way where we recognize, yeah, we have differences and yes, there are fights that are going to have to be fought, but that deep down, there is something core in us that we have in common that is extraordinary.
