{"id":9967,"date":"2025-11-16T01:27:02","date_gmt":"2025-11-16T01:27:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/?p=9967"},"modified":"2025-11-16T01:27:05","modified_gmt":"2025-11-16T01:27:05","slug":"sources-virginia-tech-in-early-talks-with-james-franklin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jubi24.com\/?p=9967","title":{"rendered":"Sources: Virginia Tech in early talks with James Franklin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article-meta\"><span class=\"timestamp \">Nov 15, 2025, 09:45 AM ET<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Former <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"899b6845-67a4-16b2-c4a6-2406312be7fc\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/team\/_\/id\/213\/penn-state-nittany-lions\">Penn State<\/a> coach James Franklin and <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"806d08d1-ce5a-ee00-17c4-6eb1b1b3561d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/team\/_\/id\/259\/virginia-tech-hokies\">Virginia Tech<\/a> are in the early stages of talks, with some resolution on his candidacy expected in the coming days, sources told ESPN&#8217;s Pete Thamel on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia Tech is still running a full search, but it&#8217;s clear there is mutual interest between the parties, sources said.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia Tech fired coach Brent Pry on Sept. 14, a day after a 45-26 home loss to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/team\/_\/id\/295\/old-dominion-monarchs\">Old Dominion<\/a> dropped the Hokies to 0-3 to start the season.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"inline editorial float-r\" data-behavior=\"article_related\">\n<h2 class=\"editorial-title\">Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/h2>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Penn State fired Franklin on Oct. 12 after 12 seasons following three straight losses, culminating with the Nittany Lions dropping their second straight home game when they fell to <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"ca8359bf-52ca-f069-b9c4-bbfbcfc15c64\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/team\/_\/id\/77\/northwestern-wildcats\">Northwestern<\/a> 22-21 in front of a stunned crowd at Happy Valley.<\/p>\n<p>Less than a year removed from an appearance in the College Football Playoff semifinals, Franklin&#8217;s program appeared to hit a new low when the Nittany Lions traveled to Los Angeles two weeks prior to that only to lose to <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"426a47d7-bf9e-2d90-af84-6533b43957e0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/team\/_\/id\/26\/ucla-bruins\">UCLA<\/a>, a team that not only was winless but hadn&#8217;t previously held a lead all season.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the season, when the three-game losing streak began against <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"116d333f-cf1a-0c67-d450-36a834af56de\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/team\/_\/id\/2483\/oregon-ducks\">Oregon<\/a> at Happy Valley, Franklin fell to 4-21 at Penn State against AP top-10 opponents, including 1-18 against top-10 Big Ten teams in conference games.
