According to a social media post by WSP, a trailer truck towing a garbage truck early in the afternoon was driving east on Highway 104, toward the bridge, when it lost control and hit a utility pole. The tow truck’s brakes did not work, according to an early report posted to social media by WSP Trooper Katherine Weatherwax. In addition, the truck had to be towed away from the scene because it was leaking fuel.
Traffic backed up on both sides of the bridge after it closed to traffic due to the crash. Traffic was alternating by around 4 p.m., according to Weatherwax and the Washington State Department of Transportation.
Several hours later, a crash occurred on Highway 3 on the Kitsap side, a few miles south of the bridge. Around 9 p.m. a 55-year-old woman from Port Ludlow was driving north near where Pioneer Highway meets Highway 3. The woman, driving a F350 truck, attempted a u-turn on the highway, according to a Washington State Patrol incident report. While the truck was turning, a Ford Ranger driven by a 17-year-old boy was head south and struck the F350 at its passenger door, rolling that truck over. The crash blocked the southbound lanes of Highway 3.
The woman was cited for an improper turn, and arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to WSP.
Several high school basketball game involving teams that need to cross the Hood Canal Bridge were called off for Tuesday night, due to traffic backups. The North Mason at Sequim boys game, Bainbridge at Port Angeles boys game, Port Angeles at Bainbridge girls, Sequim at North Mason girls, and Quilcene at Crosspoint girls will not be played.
