The Eagles on Monday afternoon made a flurry of roster moves, including a move to fill out their 53-man roster.
Here are their Monday transactions:
• Signed OLB Patrick Johnson to the 53-man roster from the practice squad
• Signed RB Montrell Johnson and OL Hollin Pierce to the practice squad
• Released WR Elijah Cooks from the practice squad
The Eagles opened up a spot on their 53-man roster this weekend when they waived guard Kenyon Green. Johnson was the logical choice to be signed to the roster. The 27-year-old edge rusher and special teamer was elevated for the Eagles’ Week 1 game against the Cowboys on Thursday night.
In Week 1, Johnson played 12 snaps on defense and 17 on special teams. With the loss of fullback Ben VanSumeren (he’s out for the season with a knee injury), Johnson will have a big role on special teams during the 2025 season.
With Johnson and Za’Darius Smith on the roster, the Eagles now have seven edge rushers on the 53-man roster: Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt, Za’Darius Smith, Patrick Johnson, Josh Uche, Azeez Ojulari, Ogbo Okoronkwo. It seems possible that either Ojulari or Okoronkwo (both healthy scratches in Week 1) might not last much longer.
Both Montrell Johnson and Pierce were undrafted rookies who spent all training camp with the Eagles. Johnson is a UDFA out of Florida and Pierce is from Rutgers. Johnson missed some time in training camp with an injury but finished strong. Pierce was a tackle in college but played guard for the Eagles this summer. This is Pierce’s second stint with the practice squad already, while Johnson is back for the first time since being waived at final cuts.
