UPDATE: Jimmy the Groundhog’s forecast was cloudy and he was unable to see his shadow during the 78th Annual Groundhog Day Prognostication on Monday in Sun Prairie. Jimmy has proclaimed that we will have an early spring.
SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WKOW) — The Wake Up Wisconsin crew will be live in Sun Prairie as the city hosts the 78th Annual Groundhog Day Prognostication on Monday (Feb. 2) at Cannery Square.
Residents and visitors are invited to gather early to see if Jimmy the Groundhog predicts six more weeks of winter or an early spring.
27 News Anchor Dana Fulton and 27 Storm Track Meteorologist Emma Hietpas will emcee the ceremony. Following the conclusion of Wake Up Wisconsin just prior to 7 a.m., there will be a brief disruption on the livestream before the event continues. The Prognostication is scheduled for sunrise at 7:11 a.m.
The morning will start with a color guard performance of the national anthem, followed by declarations from Sun Prairie Mayor Steve Stocker. State Sen. Melissa Ratcliff will then present a Gubernatorial Proclamation, marking the day as Groundhog Day in Wisconsin.
“Are you ready for Groundhog Day in the Groundhog capitol of the world?” said Jade Pekol, community events and development manager. “The chance to meet Jimmy only comes once a year, so we hope you can join us to see what he will predict!”
Leading up to the event, Sun Prairie will host the annual Frozen Fest from Jan. 28 to Feb. 1, featuring family-friendly activities such as ice carving, a winter beer garden, and a pancake breakfast.
