TUCSON, Ariz. – Long Beach State held the top spot on the leaderboard towards the close of the second round after a magnificent day from senior Alejandro de Castro Piera, who leads the tournament by four strokes through 13 holes of the second round.
 
Day One Results
 
Some of the top competitors finished the second round on Monday, but Alejandro de Castro Piera still had five holes to play and was -6 through 13 in the second round, which followed a seven-under 65 in the first round to push him to a four-stroke lead at -13 over Pongsapak Laopakdee of Arizona State as the first day of competition came to a close. The senior had eight birdies and one bogey in the first round, and had six birdies with no bogeys in the second in another strong start to a tournament for de Castro.
 
As a team, Long Beach State holds a two-stroke lead over the hosts, No. 22 Arizona and a three-stroke lead over No. 5 Arizona State as play was paused Monday evening. The Beach had four players under par in the second round, led by Jaden Huggins who was four-under par after a 72 in the first round to sit in the Top 10.
 
Graduate Steen Zeman was -2 after a first-round 71, and Krishnav Chopraa bounced back from a first-round 75 with a three-under 69 in the second as the only member of the team to complete the second round. Jack Cantlay had the team’s fourth counting round in the first, a 74.
