Thousands of residents were left without power for a little more than an hour on Thursday evening in multiple North County areas, from Carlsbad down south to Encinitas and east in Escondido, according to San Diego Gas & Electricity’s website.

The outages began at 7:41 p.m., plunging tens of thousands of North County residents into darkness until about 8:56 p.m. At one point, more than 100,000 customers were without power.

It is not yet known what caused the outage, according to SDG&E.

Coastal communities affected were Carlsbad, Encinitas, La Costa, Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Olivenhain. Other communities affected parts of Rancho Santa Fe and San Elijo Lagoon.

Communities in San Pasqual, Rancho Penasquitos, Rancho Bernardo, Escondido, Del Dios and Lake Hodges were also affected.

The outages reached as far north as southern Orange County, affecting customers in Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo and the San Juan Capistrano region.

SDG&E Media Relations Manager Anthony Wagner released a statement following the power restoration:

“Power has been fully restored to customers affected by a widespread outage impacting multiple communities in North San Diego County and Orange County this evening. We understand how disruptive outages can be and are working to investigate the cause. The safety of our customers, employees and communities remains our top priority.”
