Raleigh-Durham International Airport’s Terminal 1 was evacuated early Monday after receiving an anonymous threat just before 4:30 a.m., airport officials said.

Passengers told WRAL that they were told to leave the airport and get as far away as possible. A heavy police presence could be seen outside.

“Law enforcement and TSA officers are on-site thoroughly checking the facility,” a spokesperson told WRAL News. “Safety is our top priority, and we ask that passengers please be patient as we work to return to normal operations.”

Stephanie Necak said her flight was 10 minutes from boarding when security came through and evacuated the terminal.

RDU officials said law enforcement and TSA officers are on-site thoroughly checking the facility.

Hundreds of people waited outside for just over an hour before the all-clear for RDU employees to reenter the building  just before 6 a.m.

Sky 5 flew over the terminal at 6 a.m. showing a long line of people waiting outside.
