Durango, Colorado – Temperatures across southwest Colorado could drop below freezing late Wednesday night, putting crops, plants, and outdoor plumbing at risk before sunrise Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Freeze Watch is in effect from late Wednesday night through Thursday morning for the Four Corners region, including Durango, Cortez, and Pagosa Springs. Overnight lows could fall to around 27 degrees.
Communities across the Animas River Basin and San Juan River Basin will see the coldest temperatures develop after midnight, with frost forming quickly on exposed surfaces. Agricultural areas and home gardens are especially vulnerable, as even a brief freeze can damage early spring growth.
In Cortez, Mancos, and Dove Creek, residents should prepare for widespread frost that could impact crops and sensitive vegetation. Unprotected outdoor pipes may also be at risk in colder valleys.
Residents are urged to cover plants, bring sensitive vegetation indoors, and protect exposed plumbing ahead of the overnight temperature drop.
The freeze threat will ease after sunrise Thursday, but additional cold alerts could follow if similar conditions return later this week.
